Who or what will make me cast my vote? An honest person with natural leadership qualities. Me including, the general public have had enough of party politics with endless lies and deceptions, and the uneducated politicians who do not care two hoots about our Motherland or the people who live in it.
We want a leader whom we can look up to with pride, who will maintain a balance between the country’s economy and culture, and who will deliver a superior performance for the betterment of Sri Lanka and its people. Above all, we want party politics to be banned if possible.
The President of Sri Lanka must be an independent, impartial leader who is powerful enough to guarantee national security as well as overall discipline, which has been robbed from our country in the past years.
The people do not know what to do or what to think! The system has gone to the dogs and we cannot think of anyone to trust anymore. I will not vote, ever again, for anyone who makes false promises. It is a waste of time! It would be better to form a joint government with only decent people to run the country, but I don’t know who will come forward to save us.
It is regrettable to note that several prospective candidates running for presidency – whether they belong to the green, blue or red camps, or other groups with other colours or symbols – are not fit and fall far short of the expectations of us Sri Lankans, as they come with their personal agendas. Despite all the pledges given by the present incumbent in office at the last presidential election, he is also expected to run for a second term. Their motto is ‘Promises are meant to be broken’. We cannot place any confidence in all the seasoned players in the political arena since all their promises and policies are swept under the carpet no sooner they are elected. This has been the practice over the last couple of decades.
In my view, what Sri Lanka needs is a person with strong disciplinary qualities who can stand on his feet and lead the country, implement strong economic and social policies for the betterment of the people, and safeguard the territorial integrity of the country. This candidate should be totally independent and carry the motto ‘Country before self’. It is our fervent hope that a candidate who fulfills the above criteria will emerge to save our country from its present perils.
Pointless investing our valuable votes in the existing political culture. In that backdrop, the existing voting system can do more harm than good. There are ample examples to substantiate it. We need a sensible, fearless leader with integrity outside the usual political arena who can navigate the country on the proper path. The country has gone beyond poor financial status, social instability, and ethical instability which is higher than all of these.
This time, I will not waste my vote if I’m not sure whether the person for whom I’m going to vote is capable of ruling my country. He should be a man of valour who would be able to protect our country from all evil forces, who would work sacrificially to achieve that target. He should be a leader who can unite our country once again by example. He should be a man with a strong backbone who will not bow to the injustices of anyone whether it’s local or foreign, who should be able to work even with his opposition for the betterment of our country.
Agree. I too will not vote for anyone unless there is someone who can be trusted. We have been taken for a ride, but not again! This is the time for ordinary people to protest by boycotting elections if only the current crop are asking for our vote!
The country needs no voters or politicians looking from the angle of ‘coloured glasses.’ There should be a sensible candidate, probably a professional, from outside the ‘green,’ ‘red,’ and ‘blue’ parties.
I think Sri Lankan votes need to be given to the youth. The MPs in Parliament are the same guys who ran the show some 20-30 years ago. That’s why we are still where we were 20 years ago or worse. Sri Lanka should vote for the youth. Positive thinking teens can run the country better.
Only if, as a citizen, I can see that ‘national security’ is at the core and treated in utmost priority, will it validate the existence of the voting system. It has no reason to exist otherwise.
