SRI LANKA NATIONAL TOURIST INTERPRETER TRAINING PROGRAM : TRANSFORMING SL -TOURISM TO THE NEXT ERA
SLITHM has developed a new, highly specific, academically sound Training model named as “National TouristInterpreter”.This will be a critical tool for enhancing the quality, meaning, and sustainability of tourism experiences beyond conventional round tour guiding services. It enables visitors to understand the ecological, cultural, and social significance of Sri Lanka fostering respect, responsible behavior, and long-term conservation outcomes. By translating complex local knowledge into engaging and accurate narratives, interpretation transforms tourism from passive sightseeing into informed experiential learning.
In contexts such as Sri Lanka, where tourism landscapes are living systems shaped by biodiversity, cultural heritage and community livelihoods, effective interpretation plays a vital role in reducing environmental pressure, minimizing misuse of sensitive sites, and strengthening visitor appreciation. By training interpreters to communicate cultural heritage, ecological processes, species conservation, and climate risks. The Tourist Interpreter Programme represents an innovative, inclusive, and future-oriented approach to tourism development in Sri Lanka. By valuing expertise, traditional knowledge, and ethical interpretation this initiative can significantly strengthen the country’s tourism brand while empowering individuals and communities. This initiative will develop Tourist Interpreters various subject specializations beyond the round tours.

- Academics and Professionals with proven experiences in research and publications on specific interpretation areas under the scope of natural or cultural heritage can apply
- Three months Training model associated with field visits and practical exposure rather concerning about a fixed curriculum.
- Proposed a National Tourist Interpreter Licence issued by SLTDA and a digital badge
- Will invite hi-end researchers, explores and professionals of Associations and bring higher economic value to the country
