LEAN SIX SIGMA PROPELS BUSINESS GROWTH IN CHALLENGING TIMES

Lean Six Sigma is widely used in the manufacturing and service sectors, to reduce operational costs and lead times while improving product quality and customer satisfaction.

It is an amalgamation of two schools of thought. Six Sigma is a proven methodology to reduce process variation and significantly improve product quality to meet customer expectations through the use of statistical tools and techniques. And Lean aids in identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in the process so that operational costs can be significantly reduced.

Chief Executive Officer Dayan Hengedara and Managing Partner Pradeesh Wanniarachchi are spearheading The Lean Six Sigma Company Asia. It is a think tank for industrial optimisation that places a premium on customer-centric ideas.

In 2019, the innovative and seasoned duo began operations in Sri Lanka as a franchise partner of The Lean Six Sigma Company in the Netherlands, and have since blazed a trail by introducing, implementing and executing this groundbreaking concept across a wide range of business sectors in Asia.

The highest classification standard is guaranteed by conforming to ISO 18404 and ISO 13053 regulations, and the company’s core values focus on providing a customer-centric experience. Moreover, its stability and efficiency have been verified by the fact that over 27,000 individuals in over 4,000 organisations have been trained in the concept, worldwide.

This philosophy of maximising profits through operational cost reduction and improved turnover can be traced back to the development of the Lean concept in the middle of the 20th century by the Toyota Production System in Japan and the advance of the Six Sigma concept in the US by Motorola in 1986.

Lean places an emphasis on locating and eradicating inefficient processes (waste) to reduce overhead expenses. And Six Sigma guarantees that businesses will be able to enhance their product and service quality, as well as the pleasure of their customers, by eliminating process variation.

As such, Lean Six Sigma is the optimal instrument for Sri Lanka particularly in the current economic climate. Reducing operating expenditure, which typically accounts for 30-40 percent of overall expenses, depends on the industry. It is the only realistic alternative for minimising the negative consequences of high inflation, as there are no other viable options. In such a situation, the tools and strategies of Lean Six Sigma will come in handy!

The company’s expertise lies in assisting businesses adopt Lean Six Sigma principles by supplying them with the tools and methods necessary, as well as guiding them in developing an efficient plan. By applying the Lean Six Sigma methodology, the company has been able to help many enterprises in Sri Lanka and Asia achieve notable success. This support has earned the organisation an excellent reputation.

The Lean Six Sigma Company Asia also works closely with top public and private universities to provide training for faculty members and students. This training will help develop the next generation of professionals who will be able to equip themselves with Lean Six Sigma principles and play an essential role in expanding our economy in the future.

To provide the most beneficial educational experience for Sri Lankan students, the organisation includes training in traditional and virtual classroom settings. It combines state-of-the-art software tools with simulation-based advanced teaching strategies and case studies.

What differentiates its distinctive approach to mentoring is one of the hallmarks of the organisation. Its trainers have a wealth of experience gained over many years in various critical global domains. The company also incorporates individualised project mentorship in the curriculum so that each student can effectively steer Lean Six Sigma projects in their organisations once they graduate.

All the pedagogical tools including the simulations, are developed in-house in the Netherlands to guarantee that they are up to worldwide benchmarks and industry standards. Students in Asia have the distinct advantage of obtaining highly regarded credentials, which are in great demand in the world, at a fraction of the cost that students in developed nations would pay.

Success is achieved when the enchantment of imagination, application and tenacity is mixed with the unique dynamism of the individual. This yields the ideal combination of ingredients. Hengedara and Wanniarachchi are excellent examples of how to put this philosophy into practice.

Despite many challenges, the dynamic duo continues to invest in themselves and expand their knowledge. And this has resulted in the generation of novel ideas and innovative experiments, which is the proven formula for the sustained success of Lean Six Sigma in Sri Lanka.
