Q: Congratulations on completing 20 successful years in Sri Lanka! What was the potential and opportunity Prym Intimates identified in the local market all those years ago?

A: The decision to set up Prym Intimates in Sri Lanka was made based on an invitation by MAS Holdings to augment the local apparel industry supply chain.

This was a strategic initiative taken by MAS Holdings at the time to increase industry competitiveness by developing an in-country supply chain solution to support the burgeoning lingerie industry in Sri Lanka.

In alignment with this vision, Prym Intimates identified lingerie as a growing industry in the country with steadily increasing demand. We recognised the country’s potential to become a lingerie hub in the region and supply products to renowned international lingerie brands around the world.

Having thoroughly evaluated the industry at the time, Prym Intimates felt it was a viable business opportunity to pursue. After setting up operations here, the company was also able to capitalise on local talent to operate manufacturing facilities, as well as employ a capable middle management team.

Q: In a rapidly evolving world where clients face new challenges every day and need better solutions, how has your organisation transformed over the years to keep up with market trends and demand?

A: Prym Intimates is a subsidiary of William Prym in Stolberg, Germany – a company that has been in operation for nearly 500 years. William Prym has remained a strong company over the years by continuously reinventing itself to meet evolving demands and trends in the global market.

Backed by this expertise and experience, one of the main strengths of Prym Intimates is innovation. It is a key factor that has enabled the company to evolve over time to meet ever-changing customer requirements.

Q: Sustainability has become a buzzword in the apparel industry. How has your company contributed to the cause by walking the talk in terms of operating sustainably?

A: At Prym, we walk our sustainability talk. We are passionate about sustainable manufacturing and have prepared a detailed roadmap to drive our sustainability agenda across our operations.

This roadmap also includes building awareness within our team and providing members with the necessary knowledge and tools to operate sustainably. The company holds ISO 9001:2015, 14001-2015, 14064: 2006, 45001:2018 certification, as well as Higg accreditation and GRS certification.

We have also aligned ourselves to the GRI Standards and signed up to the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) programme. Our sustainability plans include a systematic reduction in our water, electricity and chemical usage, and the responsible discarding of manufacturing waste. We are also taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint and have invested in a reforestation project to convert 3.4 hectares of land into a forest.

Q: How has your industry been impacted by the global economic climate? What have you done to overcome challenges under the existing macroeconomic conditions?

A: The current adverse macroeconomic climate is affecting everyone. In order to emerge unscathed, it’s important to maintain uninterrupted services to customers during this time.

We have ensured that we deliver on all our promises to our buyers to establish that we are a reliable supply chain partner. And we have also found innovative solutions to bring products to our customers on time to meet their expectations.

Additionally, we have built the infrastructure needed to maintain an ongoing supply for our clients from multiple locations, thereby reducing the risk of nondelivery.

Q: What are your organisation’s expansion plans going forward?

A: As the industry evolves, we want to get closer to the needlepoint of bra makers and provide an uninterrupted supply of our products so that apparel vendors can respond to market demands more effectively. We recently opened our doors in Bangladesh by establishing a liaison office to service our customers with a medium-term plan to set up manufacturing operations there.

Prym Intimates has successfully introduced many innovative products to the market over the years and will continue to do so in the future too.
