p-82077-300xThe Ministry of Sports will provide funds to construct swimming pools in all districts of the island, working towards the national vision of taking local swimming forward to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

According to Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara, the ministry will select one main school in each district and then link other schools to it, to ensure that all students are given the chance to use a swimming pool. This is done with the intention of creating accessibility to the sport of swimming, which is predominantly popular among Colombo schools, and those in Kandy, Galle and Gampaha.

The ministry also plans to bring down foreign coaches to train young Sri Lankan swimmers, to further efforts to promote the sport across the island.
