Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara was reportedly instructed by Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Hemasiri Fernando to take stern action against vehicle owners with horns producing a sound more than 105 decibels, which was said to contribute to noise pollution.

This was decided at a ministry meeting attended by President Maithripala Sirisena last week.

Consequently, Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Ajith Rohana is said to be informing all police stations throughout the country to enforce the controlling measure.

Defence Ministry sources state that several short and long-term proposals to create a developed and disciplined country were also discussed at this meeting, including proposals to hold a ‘Silent Day’ in the future with the participation of schoolchildren, passengers and drivers.
