Q: Is employee engagement crucial in the context of nurturing a great workplace culture?
A: Yes, employee engagement is a crucial factor in nurturing a great workplace culture.

We believe in working together with all teams, their managers and leadership to build a cohesive relationship that will increase employee engagement within the organisation.

Additionally, we encourage our teams to build relationships and friendships that will help better their work community. This is accomplished through in-house facilities and communication strategies, one of which is the recreational club – it helps people working across different areas engage in fun activities together.

We conduct many in-house training sessions and team building exercises that commence as employees begin their second year at SYNERGEN Health. The training is a two-way process and includes communicating with various employees, and having them participate in activities and exercises.

SYNERGEN Health is a Sri Lankan company with a strong US clientele base. Therefore, we hire many US consultants to host training programmes, which leads to international market exposure and in return benefits our employees.

Q: What is the role of senior management in promoting an open culture?
A: SYNERGEN Health’s leadership thrives on both good values and an open culture.

To this end, we believe that apart from an individual’s skill set, it is also important to know his or her value system; and this is one of the most crucial evaluation factors when recruiting new team members.

We pride ourselves on our corporate DNA, which comprises innovation, excellence and joy. As such, our value system too consists of many attributes such as caring, learning, achieving, sharing and being socially responsible.

While many Sri Lankan companies believe in the traditional hierarchical culture, this can be detrimental when trying to maintain an open culture policy. At SYNERGEN Health however, when it comes to communicating with one another, we use a very flat communication structure that is much more effective within our value system as well.

Q: How does innovation and customer satisfaction contribute to the workplace culture?
A: SYNERGEN Health is a technological and solutions enabled company that works with the healthcare sector in the United States. We believe that innovation is a vital contributor to workplace culture.

We promote innovation and suggestions on all aspects from our team; and we encourage employees to think of their own innovative strategies and ideas, which we evaluate and implement with successful ideas being rewarded.

At SYNERGEN Health, we also have a separate solutions team that works on both internal and external solutions. These team members work on AI, robotic process automation (RPA) and machine learning.

Q: Can a great workplace culture contribute to organisational performance?
A: Having been among the top 25 and 40 best places to work, we’ve observed higher employee productivity and performance levels owing to our performance driven culture.

We also believe in achieving a high trust index and promoting teamwork instead of individual work.

Q: And how is SYNERGEN Health coping with the pandemic?
A: At first, we didn’t embrace the concept of working from home (WFH). However, moving to a cloud system business model resulted in it being an ideal solution during the pandemic.

As we’re part of the American healthcare sector, we were not impacted. Instead, our sales increased and we have hired over 150 graduates during the pandemic.

We would like to thank our team members who worked together during a difficult situation and produced healthy results.
