Sydney has woken up to a thick blanket of smoke over the city amid raging bushfires.

The smog from a large fire at Gospers Mountain, north-west of the city, was dragged over Sydney by winds on Tuesday morning.

The haze is not likely to dissipate until a southerly wind change in the afternoon.

The air quality rating is poor and people with asthma or other breathing issues are being warned to stay indoors, avoid outdoor exercise and seek medical advice as needed.
