The National Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Climate Change Impacts – 2016-2025 was drafted in line with the guidelines set forth by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change with the aim of strengthening the island’s disaster preparedness. This project was conducted in collaboration with state and private sector stakeholders.

The adaptation plan covers the aspect of food security, including the areas of water resources, health, resettlement and provision of infrastructure facilities; ecosystems and biodiversity; tourism and recreation; export agriculture; industry; and energy and transportation.

Accordingly, the proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to implement the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan starts with the initiation of sector-based and midterm priority programmes.
