Q: Could you take us through Mad Mobile’s history?

A: Mad Mobile was founded over 10 years ago by Bruce Bennett and Greg Schmitzer, who had a vision of integrating modern technology into the retail sector. As part of this vision, they looked to reimagine the way businesses and customers interact with one another, elevating this experience to a level never seen before.

Over the years, as our business grew, so too did the business areas that we operate within. Today, Mad Mobile focusses on three key sectors – retail, restaurant and payments. And with products in over 21,000 stores, we are poised for continued growth.

Q: What prompted Mad Mobile’s decision to acquire CAKE?

A: This was a great opportunity for us as an organisation and an area that Mad Mobile was keen to expand to. At the time, we were only operating within the retail sector and this brought us into an adjacent one – restaurants.

We are an organisation that always takes a mobile first customer-centric view, and this acquisition enabled us to introduce a next gen point of sale (POS) solution featuring modern architecture and mobile capabilities.

If you look at society today, everyone is glued to their phones – we’ve evolved to become a mobile society. Most people don’t put their phones down when they walk into a restaurant or even when interacting with the people around them at the restaurant. By combining Mad Mobile and CAKE, we’ve been able to elevate the experience for both the business and customer by taking it mobile.

Finally, not only did the acquisition come with cutting-edge technology and a large customer base but it also provided us with the opportunity to acquire a talented team from Sri Lanka who focussed on engineering excellence – that is the business known as Mad Mobile LK.

Q: Can you outline Mad Mobile’s product suite and the vision for the same?

A: Mad Mobile currently provides a product suite catered to both the restaurant and retail sectors.

In terms of restaurants, we provide an all in one POS solution for restaurant operators – the product known as CAKE. This suite provides solutions for the front and back of the house for restaurant operations.

And in addition to solutions such as POS systems, we provide customers with online ordering solutions, self-servicing kiosks and guest manager solutions, where operators can use the platform to manage all their tables at the restaurant and CAKE MenuPad to name a few.

Presently, we’re also working on additional features for our product suite such as dine in mobile ordering where customers would be able to enter a restaurant, sit at a table, order their meals and when they’re done, even pay for it at the table from their mobile devices. This will go a long way in reimagining the entire restaurant experience, making it faster, and more efficient for both the restaurant operator and customer.

When you look at our retail product suite, which is known in the market as Concierge, it aims to personalise retail experiences through products such as mPOS, Clienteling and Concierge Connect to name a few.

In terms of the vision for our product suite, we’re always looking at ways in which we can grow them and make them relevant to the world of today, the customer and the customer’s customer. To do this, we’re constantly integrating the latest technologies into our products including by identifying areas where we can bring in tools such as AI into our platforms.

Q: How has integrating local talent enhanced operations – and why was Sri Lanka chosen as an operational destination?

A: Sri Lanka has a reputation for being a talent hub for engineering. This speaks highly of the higher educational infrastructure in the country.

The operations are an extended centre of our Engineering and Operations in Tampa, and each employee plays a big role for us.

Through our current business model, we’re now able to keep our operations going 24/7 to assist our customers, which is extremely important in the sectors we operate within. What this means is with the time difference between the US and Sri Lanka, once the team in the United States is done for the day, the Sri Lankan team takes over, ensuring our operations continue to run efficiently and effectively.

Q: And finally, what’s the vision for the future in terms of growth?

A: The organisation is growing and there’s a lot of excitement for it with Sri Lanka being the foundation for our growth.

Presently, the Sri Lankan operations only focus on our restaurant and payments segments. In the coming months however, we’ll be integrating retail operations in Sri Lanka as well with a keen focus on leveraging the exceptional talent that we have here to further grow that business vertical.
