Q: How important is it for businesses to uphold corporate respect in times of crisis?

A: Regardless of various crises, corporates in general must conduct their affairs in a manner that garners the trust and confidence of all stakeholders. A crisis tests the values of a corporate.

During such times, organisations face difficulties in staying afloat and ensuring operations can be carried out. When facing such challenges, the negative side of businesses tend to surface.

It is important to put your core values in the forefront to earn the trust and confidence of all stakeholders; and convey that even amidst a crisis, the organisation’s values are not compromised.

This is also where allegations are levelled as businesses during crises tend to engage in unethical practices to survive, compete and exist. Therefore, it is crucial that corporates demonstrate the ability to maintain the trust and confidence of stakeholders.

Q: How costly is it to earn and maintain corporate respect today, given the volatile and uncertain business environment?

A: Maintaining corporate respect in a crisis is a tough task – because when the country lacks economic freedom, entities tend to collude with various authorities to do business, gain market share, obtain approvals, etc.

In such times, organisations tend to cross ethical boundaries to ensure operations are maintained, and blame cannot be laid solely on them as they seek to prioritise stakeholders. If operations are halted, livelihoods of thousands are affected.

Ethically and value wise, it’s costly to maintain respect; and when a corporate’s limits are tested, that’s when a business’ ethics and respectability can be assessed.

Q: How important are stakeholder perceptions – and why?

A: Stakeholder perceptions are of paramount importance as these lead to corporate respect. One may define corporate respect as how much employees are respected by stakeholders. An organisation is its employees; and if employees are not respectable, the organisation cannot gain respect.

Respect earns you money – not the other way around. If all stakeholders believe and respect us, this becomes the measurement by which stakeholders value our goods and services. It’s important in maintaining respect as it indicates that stakeholders value employees from the top tier to the bottom.

The value that is attached to the organisation is the same that passes on to the brand, product and employees. If respect cannot be maintained, values cannot be met. If stakeholder perceptions are poor, it directly affects the organisation and its income. Finally, perception is the reality.

We placed our trust in stakeholders and conducted a third party survey to assess our standing. The results helped us to introduce a new brand identity that led to a change in our logo, exterior, interior branding and personality traits.

Q: What are the main attributes of your organisation’s image?

A: LANKATILES is among the Most Respected for three aspects: distinguishing right from wrong, moral integrity and standing for what is right. We’re operating in a volatile environment where the public mood changes rapidly – especially in the construction industry.

As an entity that can distinguish right from wrong, LANKATILES takes a stand for what is right and upholds its moral integrity. Amidst negative public perception regarding the industry, we have been bold in taking a stand on economic, social and political matters. Corporates must strive to stand for what is right and work with integrity.

LANKATILES is an entity respected for its ethical values and integrity. It has revamped its brand identity to align with modern market trends emphasising youthfulness, cheerfulness, contemporariness and being conversational. It stands for what is right and upholds moral integrity in a volatile business environment.
