Q: Do you believe that employees’ expectations of employers have changed due to the pandemic and economic crisis?

A: Absolutely. The pandemic and economic crisis have undoubtedly caused a shift in employees’ expectations of employers.

Our employees, in line with the FedEx ‘People-Service-Profit’ (PSP) culture, are prioritised when it comes to flexibility in work arrangements, remote work options, enhanced health and safety measures, and stronger support for mental wellbeing.

Q: The pandemic has come and gone but the changes to the work culture that it brought on are here to stay. Is this true for your organisation?

A: Indeed. The pandemic has brought about lasting changes to our work culture at FedEx Sri Lanka, aligning with our PSP culture.

Furthermore, it has made our organisation embrace agility and innovation, and prompted a heightened focus on safety. We have always valued our employees’ health and safety, and we will continue to support their physical and mental wellbeing.

The pandemic showcased the feasibility of remote work for various roles and also helped us recognise the value of remote work. We have embraced a hybrid approach that allows employees to balance office and remote work, emphasising our core values of People-Service-Profit.

Our investment in digital collaboration tools ensures seamless communication, regardless of physical locations.

Q: What measures have been taken by your company over the last 12-18 months to unleash the untapped potential of the workforce?

A: Over the past 12-18 months, in accordance with FedEx Sri Lanka’s PSP culture, we implemented several initiatives to unleash the untapped potential of our workforce.

We introduced cross-functional projects that encourage collaboration across departments, provided comprehensive upskilling programmes to enhance skills, and established mentorship opportunities to foster growth and development.

These actions are aligned with our commitment to fostering a culture that values our employees and their development.

A: Creating a great workplace for all aligns perfectly with FedEx Sri Lanka’s PSP culture and values. We prioritise transparent communication, and recognising and rewarding employees’ contributions as a demonstration of our commitment to valuing people.

We offer personalised career development plans that resonate with our focus on service, and emphasise employee wellbeing through wellness programmes and mental health support, reinforcing the value of profit by investing in our most important asset – our employees.

Furthermore, we believe that creating a great workplace for all is an ongoing effort that requires continuous commitment, adaptation, and a genuine desire to prioritise the wellbeing and success of every individual within the organisation, while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where all employees feel valued, engaged and empowered.

Q: Can you share some best practices adopted by your organisation to tide through the unprecedented challenges brought about by the economic crisis?

A: During the economic crisis, FedEx Sri Lanka, guided by our PSP culture and values, implemented various best practices to navigate challenges.

We focussed on cost optimisation without compromising employee wellbeing and made agile decisions based on real-time data to ensure service excellence, maintained open communication with employees about our strategy, and explored the diversification of our service offering to adapt to changing market demands – all while keeping our profitability in mind.
