There are about six million social media users in Sri Lanka, Deputy Minister of Vocational Training and Skills Development Karunarathna Paranawithana revealed at a workshop held at the Department of Government Information. Paranawithana thus noted that social media could be used as a medium to communicate the development news of the country.

Meanwhile, Acting Director General of the Department of Government Information and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) Sudarshana Gunawardena stated that SLBC was able to make vast changes and increase the number of listeners just three months into using social media for promotional activities.
