Q: How would you define ‘corporate respect’?

Naveed Cader (NC): In Sri Lanka, respect is influenced by perception in and between organisations. To garner respect, core values such as trust, reliability and ethics are essential. Leadership must consistently deliver on commitments, building a strong track record, and customer satisfaction is fundamental for retaining key stakeholders.

Perception and brand reputation begin with leadership and extend throughout the organisation. Strong, ethical leadership; clear communication of vision and mission; and recognition of all stakeholders are the keys to being respected as an intelligent corporate entity.

Q: How does one earn and maintain corporate respect today?

NC: Despite being a young company with limited financial reserves at the time of the Easter Sunday attacks, an unwavering commitment to our beliefs and ethics set us apart. During the COVID-19 and economic crises, we maintained transparency with our staff, managing expectations and retaining most employees through clear communication.

The cinema sector, often hardest hit by such crises, recovers slowly. Through staff motivation, clear vision, quick planning and adaptability, we navigated these challenges successfully. Surviving crises garnered us respect; and when we reopened eventually, we emerged stronger, having learned and adapted from our experiences.

Q: What role do employees play in corporate respect?

NC: Leaders and executives must effectively communicate the vision and mission to uphold corporate respect. We believe hiring individuals with strong ethics ensures these values are maintained across the board. Professional integrity requires a team effort, not only leadership.

Workplace culture must promote fair treatment, free from cultural barriers. Transparency, open communication and constructive feedback are essential. An inclusive culture that values diversity ensures all ideas are respected.
