A peek into the life of Soraya Cader

UNPLUGGED

In conversation with Natalie Seneviratne

What do you do at the beginning of your day that sets the tone before work begins?

I like to start my day with prayer, followed by a good coffee and quiet moment to go through my to-do list.

Which personal habit or routine has had the greatest impact on your professional life?

Staying connected to people – whether its clients, my team or friends, investing in relationships has been the most valuable part of my life’s journey.

How do you maintain a healthy balance between your personal life and a demanding work schedule?

I try to find enjoyment in what I do and the people I’m around – work and life blend quite naturally for me.

If you had a month to unplug anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go and what would you do there?

Somewhere in Europe, perhaps the South of France or Italy – I’d spend my time exploring small towns, visiting vineyards, enjoying long coffees and discovering local artisans.

On challenging days, what helps you reset your mind and regain clarity?

Stepping away even briefly… a coffee, a walk or spending time with my dog Charlie helps me reset.

What’s been the defining moment in your leadership journey so far?

Realising that leadership is ultimately about people, treating them well and truly understanding them – people are your greatest asset; so when you value them and put them first, you bring out the very best in them.

Where do you draw inspiration from beyond the world of business?

My recent involvement in advocating for stronger leadership and governance in family clubs in Colombo has been important. Working alongside a team of professional, honest, and committed individuals, who stand for justice and what is right, has been both inspiring and deeply meaningful.

On a lighter note, I also draw inspiration from fashion and style – it’s a form of expression and reflects how I feel. I also like to meet and get to know enterprising people, chat with them and listen to their stories.

One facet of leadership you’re consciously trying to improve…

Letting go and trusting people more while still maintaining strong standards.

If you could capture the essence of your leadership style in a short phrase, what would it be?

Lead with the heart, stand with strength.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind as a leader?

That I created opportunities, empowered women and built something meaningful that goes beyond mere business.

What book, podcast or piece of content has influenced you recently – and why did it resonate with you?

I’ve started reading more recently, and I’m enjoying the process of learning and gaining new perspectives through reading.

If you could give your younger self one meaningful piece of advice, what would it be?

Spend time learning a trade or a skill and turn it into something meaningful, something you can also build into a business that technology alone cannot replace and focus on new ideas that involve a personal touch.

An unconventional leadership insight you’ve learnt that others may find surprising…

That sometimes, being a good leader means taking responsibility for things you didn’t do, for the sake of the others in your team.

What personal value or principle do you refuse to compromise?

Integrity!

How do you spend your ideal weekend when you’re not working?

I like spending time with friends and family, enjoying cafes, tasting and drinking wine, and spending meaningful time with my daughters, cousins and my dog Charlie.

As a former athlete, I also stay active with a routine that I created for myself, which includes sprints, weights, Pilates, walks and swimming.

What’s the most memorable travel or life experience that has shaped the way you see the world?

Travelling through Europe has deeply influenced my perspective on beauty and lifestyle.

If someone shadowed you for a day, which one of your routines would surprise him or her?

How much of my work revolves around people and relationships.

What’s a simple everyday pleasure that brings you unexpected joy?

A good coffee (even if it’s alone) or quiet walk.

And what is the most underrated skill that today’s leaders should cultivate?

Emotional intelligence.

Name someone outside your sector whom you admire – and why?

Women who build quietly but powerfully.

A common misconception people have about leaders at your level…

That everything is always in control.

Looking ahead, what excites you the most about the next phase of your life and career?

Building meaningful experiences for women combining jewellery, travel, fashion and lifestyle – I would love to write a lifestyle blog.
