Leaders in innovation for safe and secure packaging solutions

Q: What is the sustainable innovation strategy that has been adopted by J.F. Packaging?

A: Sustainable innovation is required to meet the current and future needs of people with new designs, products and services, which benefit the economy by minimising harmful substances entering the environment. This in turn protects the consumer – especially the next generation.

With the backing and guidance of J.F. Packaging’s management team as well as a dedicated R&D unit, the company has been able to manufacture top quality, sustainable and flexible products for export, as well as for the domestic market.

Our vivid layout designs with flexography or rotogravure multi-colour prints using solvent, water-based and UV inks, solvent-based lamination, water-based and solvent-less adhesives, and pouch designs are highly sought after by our clients as they are uniquely designed.

The company also offers packaging solutions such as shrinkable PETG labels, pouches with spout inserts and zip locks, Alu lidding and packaging for frozen meat, milk and other dairy products such as cheese.

Q: To what extent is the sector optimising technological advancements?

A: J.F. Packaging is known for its capacity for innovation and for receiving the most number of awards as a packaging company in Sri Lanka over several years. The company has proven time and again that it is the leader in the flexible packaging industry. It is always striving to develop and launch, new and innovative packaging solutions to keep pace with modern trends and market requirements, as well as consumer safety and wellbeing.

We are the pioneers in researching and developing the ‘Covid Virus Protected Food Package,’ which won the most prestigious World Star Award 2021 from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). The main feature of this packaging is that it is designed to protect consumers and their families from the COVID-19 virus.

Professional guidance, creative thinking, and dedicated and knowledgeable staff are the main factors that contributed to the conceptualisation, design and launch of this innovative product. The availability of advanced technology for hi-tech extrusion, printing, laminating and pouch making machines also helped make this concept a reality.

Q: How has J.F. Packaging responded to the need for sustainable solutions?

A: J.F. Packaging has successfully developed bio-based plastic technology from film blowing to the pouch making process under oxo-biodegradable and compostable biodegradable streams while adhering to international standards. Additionally, the benefit of compostable plastic is resulting in a saving of over 30 percent of petrochemical resources and a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent.

In 2021, the company entered the circular economy with post-consumer recycled (PCR) polythene and laminates. J.F. Packaging is capable of offering packaging with 70 percent recycled materials. The carbon footprint reduction from this initiative is estimated to be around 80 percent.

Q: How would you describe the competition and what strategies do you employ to stay ahead?

A: As an ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 certified company, we can assure consumer safety due to the use of superior quality food grade certified raw materials and stringent food safety procedures.

J.F. Packaging’s leadership status was evidenced when it won the most prestigious World Star Award 2021 in addition to 14 Lanka Star Awards, as well as awards for sustainable innovations at the annual packaging event organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging.

The company has and will always be one that cares for and works towards the betterment of the planet – to make it a better place today and tomorrow for future generations.
