Dual citizenship was granted to 1,750 expatriates at a recent ceremony hosted by the Sri Lankan immigration authorities. While 23,000 expatriates had applied for dual citizenship, only 1,750 were approved in this instance.

The initiative to grant dual citizenship for expatriates, primarily consisting of those who were forced to flee the country during the war, was put in place after the current government came into power following the 2015 elections.
