GRANBELL HOTEL COLOMBO
Q: How has Granbell Hotel Colombo fared since its opening?
A: After opening our doors in May 2022, the hotel faced a slow start during the first few months due to economic instability in the country. However, we have recovered well and been achieving an average of over 45 percent occupancy since November.
Q: What challenges did the hotel face amid the pandemic and ensuing economic crisis – and how did it overcome them?
A: Since April last year, we’ve faced several issues with regard to recruiting staff, sourcing required materials during construction and finding supplies for day-to-day operations. However, despite being a newcomer to the country’s hospitality sector, Granbell Hotel Colombo has already received rave reviews from clients and travel agents alike.
We also faced severe limitations in relation to foreign guests due to travel restrictions when travelling to Sri Lanka, which affected our revenue heavily. However, we were able to budget based on a positive trend from February 2022.
Q: And what were the opportunities that Granbell Hotel identified in Sri Lanka and encouraged it to open its doors?
A: Having opened Le Grand in August 2018, the hotel’s owner Belluna – a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange – was happy with how the property progressed and decided to expand its portfolio to Granbell Hotel Colombo. Belluna also owns 447 Luna Tower, which is an apartment complex situated in Union Place.
Sri Lanka and Japan have had a great working relationship for over 70 years, and the launch of these properties only cemented this longstanding friendship between the two countries and is positioned to bring in much needed foreign exchange to the island nation. The owner also has plans for future developments to expand its portfolio in Sri Lanka.
Q: How have the local tourism industry and its marketing efforts assisted the hotel with occupancy?
A: Granbell Hotel has forged strong relationships with local industry operators and global destination management companies to promote the property across key markets, such as Europe, India and the Middle East. We will also be a part of a tourism campaign focussing on the country, which is being organised by Sri Lanka Tourism in several key markets.
Q: What facilities at Granbell Hotel Colombo have captivated patrons’ interest – and how will they be developed further?
A: Our infinity pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the Indian Ocean, chill rooftop bar, all day dining restaurant, and Minori Japanese restaurant focussing on teppanyaki and tempura cuisine have been some of the highlights for many of our patrons.
Similarly, the mix of Japanese and Sri Lanka architecture that gives the feel of a resort in the city, as well as our sea view rooms, which enable guests to feel like they are sailing, have attracted visitors.
We also introduced a monthly Japanese buffet and high tea, weekend dinner buffets and weekly live entertainment (Jazz Sunday, Retro Nights, Blues Night and so on), complemented by signature cocktails and spirits.
Our mix of Japanese and Sri Lankan hospitality has also been an attraction for guests, as well as the blend provided in our service standards. We also have a fully equipped gym, a spa, a dance studio and an indoor Jacuzzi for all gym users and members.
Q: Could you outline the plans the hotel has to attract local and overseas guests?
A: Granbell Hotel Colombo has participated in two travel fairs – SATTE 2023 in India and Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. We also plan to be a part of the World Travel Market in the UK and ITB Berlin to enhance our visibility among guests from around the world.
In addition, we have a range of campaigns targeting individual travellers from our key markets of India, the Middle East and the UK. For incentive groups and those coming through travel agents, we have focussed heavily on promoting the best possible rates to relevant companies.
As for the local market, we entice travellers looking for a quick getaway in the city without the hassle of travelling by offering a range of value added services. We also attract honeymoon guests, families looking to get away for the day and corporate clients.
With a banquet space for 65 people, we target corporate guests seeking venues for conferences, meetings or gatherings, as well as celebrations like weddings, birthdays and anniversary parties.
