Q: Could you describe the scope of DIMO Energy’s operations?

A: DIMO’s power and energy arm DIMO Energy provides the entire gamut of engineering solutions for any business in the spheres of power and energy – including augmenting electrical systems as necessitated by factory expansions or fulfilling energy needs with a captive plant at any business premises.

At the utility level, DIMO Energy – having been a pioneer in substation construction – boasts of commissioning more than 70 percent of the country’s grid substations together with its partner Siemens. It is geared to undertake any utility scale infrastructure project as well.

From a technical perspective, DIMO Energy has built its expertise in the sub-sectors of high voltage, medium voltage, low voltage and renewable energy, with a dedicated, specialised and well trained team of professionals to provide cutting-edge solutions.

Furthermore, DIMO Energy is the agent for many of the sector’s most reputed brands, and offers transformers, switchgears, control and automation systems, and other accessories required by the sector.

DIMO Energy also provides electrical switchboards under its own brand of DIMO Lumin and state-of-the-art type tested modular switchboards from Siemens. It also undertakes preventive maintenance of electrical systems to ensure that they are immune to any catastrophe or hazard.

Q: How does DIMO Energy add sustainable value to the renewable energy sector?

A: DIMO Energy has introduced many state-of-the-art solutions to the Sri Lankan energy sector such as the country’s first microgrid project implemented at the University of Moratuwa.

DIMO Energy is well geared to undertake cutting-edge solar solutions – be it a rooftop or ground mounted installation – which results in long-lasting monetary benefits.

Many industries are burdened with rising electricity costs and the DI-SOLAR team of the DIMO Energy cluster provides innovative solutions to overcome the burden. Furthermore, the team is well geared to provide any cogeneration solution optimising heat dissipation with the latest cutting-edge technology provided by Siemens.

Q: DIMO implemented Sri Lanka’s first grid tied microgrid system. What will be the future of these types of solutions?

A: Specialised industries such as sophisticated equipment manufacturers, data centres and so on require uninterrupted power where microgrid systems would come in handy. These solutions are future centric, and would have the capacity to be adopted by many sectors such hospitality, healthcare and the like.

Microgrids are becoming widely popular in the African region as they have the scalability to penetrate many areas. We believe that in no time, these systems will take off in Sri Lanka as well.

Clubbed under the brand DI-SOLAR, it is not only microgrids but also other innovative solar solutions that DIMO Energy offers to its much valued clientele that could revolutionise the energy sector in Sri Lanka.

Q: How has the power and energy sector been impacted by challenges over the last year – and how can it recover?

A: Since Sri Lanka is not endowed with any fossil fuel energy sources, any adverse market fluctuations in coal and crude oil prices will be deeply felt by electricity consumers. In such an instance, tariff rates would follow a steep increase, which has to be absorbed by mainly households.

Consequent to this phenomena and weaker purchasing power, electricity demand underwent a steep contraction. With the proposed restructuring of the state power utility, it is deemed that greater efficiencies would come into the sector with a high degree of transparency and access to information.

DIMO Energy has been an aggressive contender in the recent solar tenders of the utility and has the capacity to undertake a leading role to resurrect the power sector of Sri Lanka with its technical proficiency gained over the years whilst blending this with the expertise of its longstanding partner Siemens.

Moreover, DIMO Energy can play a pivotal role in attracting much needed foreign direct investment (FDI) to the sector, leveraging its collaboration with leading international power developers.

Q: Could you outline DIMO Energy’s expansion in the power sector in and beyond Sri Lanka?

A: Sri Lanka’s electrification level stands at 99.6 percent and DIMO Energy can claim to be a key contributor to this success story by having augmented the backbone electricity network in the country’s power utility infrastructure.

DIMO installed the nation’s first variable shunt reactor (VSR), facilitating the integration of renewable energy plants, thereby contributing to the largest utility scale wind power plant as the electrical balance of plant contractor.

Moreover, DIMO Energy already has its presence in electrical solutions for luxury resorts in the Maldives whilst utility scale power distribution projects have been undertaken in Myanmar and Uganda. The company intends to aggressively expand its footprint beyond the shores of Sri Lanka to power the future while fuelling dreams and aspirations of the communities.

It is already supporting many Sri Lankan companies with their overseas expansion strategies by deploying its teams to those locations. This has been a major comfort to many Sri Lankan enterprises where the challenges of material price fluctuations and scarcity, skilled labour shortages, and the inability to meet industry norms and standards can all be overcome.
