TRANQUIL TRAILS SIGIRIYA
BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN DAMBULLA
BY Wageesha Samaraweera Design

Designed by Archt. Wageesha Samaraweera, the Tranquil Trails Sigiriya boutique hotel in Dambulla is a gentle insertion into the dry zone landscape. The architecture speaks a language of simplicity, creating a sense of belonging and a deep, unforced connection with nature.
The hotel’s layout is thoughtfully composed, drawing direct inspiration from the ancient water garden layouts of nearby Sigiriya. The entrance pavilion acts as a gateway, welcoming guests into a journey through the property. From there, pathways unfold – not as rigid lines but as a gentle network, guiding visitors past the villa building that houses individual guest rooms and towards the pool.

The main elements of the property are arranged along a central axis, connecting the main building – which houses the guest bedrooms – with the pool, the paddy field and the Sigiriya Rock in the distance. This circulation and spatial arrangement mirror the experience of Sigiriya’s gardens, where movement between spaces is as important as the destinations themselves.

The core architectural idea was to build in a way that feels honest and homely. The hotel embraces an indoor outdoor living concept with spaces that flow effortlessly into the surrounding landscape. The material palette is entirely natural and locally sourced, comprising warm timber, rough stone for floors and pathways, and classic clay roof tiles. These materials were chosen not only for their beauty but also for their ability to age gracefully and blend with the environment.

In a region defined by its dry climate, the approach to landscaping is intentionally light. Rather than introducing lush, water intensive gardens, the design works with the existing scenery. The view is focussed on the working paddy field directly in front of the property. This respectful dialogue with the agrarian setting is highlighted by the pool, positioned at the edge of the property so it visually merges with the fields, creating a serene and natural vista.
Inside, the atmosphere is calm and familiar. The furniture draws inspiration from mid-century modern design, with simple, clean lines that echo the aesthetic of traditional Sri Lankan homes, creating a comfortable and unpretentious vibe.
Tranquil Trails Sigiriya is not a place that shouts for attention. It’s a quiet sanctuary where the architecture steps back, allowing the authentic spirit of the land and local life to be the true highlight.
