The state owned Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) of the Port of Colombo witnessed a growth of 23.3 percent from January to September with the transhipment volume handled by JCT reaching 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) compared to 1.2 million TEUs handled during the corresponding period of the prior year – the Port of Colombo expects to reach the seven million TEU target by the end of 2018.

This increase was the collective result of increases at JCT, Colombo International Container Terminal and South Asia Gateway Terminal, according to Minister of Ports and Shipping Mahinda Samarasinghe, and Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake.

The Port of Colombo – which was ranked No. 1 in container growth among the top 30 container ports for the first half of 2018 – has leaped ahead of many other Asian and European ports as well.
