CHEVRON LUBRICANTS LANKA
SECTOR WINNER OIL AND LUBRICANTS
Q: What terms and ideas would you use to define the concept of ‘corporate respect’?
A: Corporate respect, in my view, is the recognition and appreciation of the dignity, rights and interests of all stakeholders involved in any business – and that includes its employees, customers, suppliers, partners, shareholders and regulators, as well as the community.
Corporate respect is not only a moral obligation but also serves as a strategic advantage especially because it can enhance the reputation, performance and sustainability of a business.
I believe that corporate respect is important for several reasons, which are based on the various stakeholders involved.
Starting with employees, it can improve employee engagement and retention, as well as enable the attraction of fresh talent. In terms of customers, it can help to build customer loyalty, satisfaction and referrals. And in relation to business partners, it can strengthen relationships and improve collaboration. It can also position the company as a model corporate citizen in terms of social responsibility.
All of the above will ultimately contribute to increased shareholder value.
Q: In your considered opinion, what does it take to earn and maintain corporate respect in Sri Lanka today, given the volatile and uncertain business environment of the present times?
A: The environment is certainly very volatile and dynamic, fraught with uncertainty, both from a global perspective and a local viewpoint.
In my view, in order to earn and maintain corporate respect, companies need to ensure that they define – and adhere consistently to – a set of core values and principles, which you do not compromise on.
And in the long term, supporting your key stakeholders – especially when the going gets tough – is crucial.
The people of Chevron Lubricants Lanka collaborate each day to solve energy’s most complex challenges. By getting results the right way, we will continue to enable human progress.
Q: From your point of view, how do employees play a role in the ‘corporate respect’ equation?
A: I firmly believe that there cannot be customer satisfaction without first having employee satisfaction. This matches our corporate philosophy since our vision is to be the pre-eminent marketer of lubricants in Sri Lanka – driven by exceptional people, partnerships and performance.
Our parent company, Chevron, calls itself the ‘Human Energy Company’ since it always puts people at the centre of the energy conversation. We work to provide the energy that enables human progress around the world. And we live out this purpose every day.
Q: What are the chief characteristics of Chevron Lubricant Lanka’s image, in your considered opinion?
A: Chevron in Sri Lanka has maintained its position of market leadership for over three decades. This has been made possible by several factors.
Firstly, by the strong brand equity of our product brand Caltex, which has also been ranked multiple times as the most loved lubricant brand in Sri Lanka.
Secondly, because of our wide distribution network, which is the widest of all lubricant players in the country, thereby ensuring widespread product availability for our consumers.
Thirdly, by dint of our qualified and experienced personnel, who are looked up to in the sector as subject matter experts.
And fourthly, as a result of our superior technology, whereby we have been the first to introduce many innovations in the lubricant sector, such as diesel engine oil with a 30,000 kilometre extended drain interval and petrol engine oil with a 10,000 kilometre extended drain interval.
