Q: Could you offer insights into Ceccato Colombo’s expansion strategy from its establishment in 2002 to its present status and diversified product offering?

A: Our expansion was mainly based on demand and research. We began with IL GELATO in 2002, bringing artisanal Italian gelato (ice cream) to Sri Lanka for the first time. That was our starting point.

Subsequently, with the growth in tourism, the demand for imported products increased as a consequence and after extensive research, and years of trial and error, our portfolio now ranges from illy coffee to San Pellegrino sparkling water, staple pantry products like extra virgin olive oils and pasta, as well as wheat flour.

Q: How has Ceccato Colombo built and managed its brand reputation over the years?

A: I believe that our reputation has been built on two things. The first is our commitment to importing and manufacturing only the highest quality Italian food products. And secondly, by upholding the customer service standards associated with said products.

Q: In your opinion, what should be done to establish and strengthen trade relationships between Sri Lanka and Italy?

A: The bilateral trade between the two countries has always been quite constant and trending upwards over the last 10 years, but food and beverage products were never a strong focus until Ceccato took up the mantle.

We noticed an increased demand for these products – especially with the number of Italian restaurants opening.

That said, the trade relationship is good but there’s still work to be done.

Q: How has your organisation – including its brands, products and services – adapted to the local market over the years?

A: Recognising the need for sustainable growth, we have started incorporating more local ingredients in our locally manufactured goods sold under the brands IL GELATO and IL CAFFÈ, the latter of which specialises in baked goods.

At IL GELATO, we developed multiple flavours using local seasonal fruits like soursop and banana. And at IL CAFFÈ, we expanded our range to include breads, fresh pasta and pastries – all made locally.

Q: Can you share your organisation’s brand philosophy for its Sri Lankan operations?

A: We are a family run business so we strive to embody the spirit of traditional Italian families where love, passion and flavour come together to create unforgettable food and beverage experiences.

Q: How do Italian brand values such as quality, craftsmanship and creativity play out in your product or service portfolio?

A: Quality, craftsmanship and creativity are definitely values that we adhere to. By incorporating these into our marketing, services and portfolio, we can create an offering that resonates with consumers, differentiates itself in the market and upholds the Italian legacy.
