Q: What new criteria do you recommend be introduced to Sri Lanka’s awards and recognition schemes for businesses?

A: Currently, there are many awards and recognition schemes for businesses in Sri Lanka. It’s important that the respective awarding bodies evaluate each year – or at least once in two years – if the questions and criteria are relevant in response to changing market conditions. They should benchmark against other global awarding platforms.

Improvements should be seen in the clear procedures, standards and methodology followed for evaluating; ranking; reviewing entities’ work; and where relevant, the respective judging panel and their expertise in the specific fields relevant to the evaluation.

We also consider the feedback we receive on how we can improve our performance. It’s very important that through these awarding platforms therefore, they offer constructive feedback for improvement and sharing success stories as the purpose is to raise the benchmark continuously.

There should be more emphasis to recognise and reward businesses for transparency, and practising corporate governance principles.

Additionally, criteria focussing on innovation and adaptability to technological advancements promote competitiveness and resilience in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

By incorporating these new criteria, Sri Lanka’s awards schemes would not only recognise business success but also promote sustainable development and societal wellbeing.
