With Sri Lankan tea production in August falling by 13 percent compared to last year, from 3.4 million kilogrammes (kg) to 23 million kg, the country is predicted to head for a significant shortfall in tea production by the end of the year.

Sri Lanka’s prevailing weather patterns are identified as the main cause of the shortage in tea production in August, which was the lowest level in 10 years.

Due to the decrease in volume, tea prices are being increased at the weekly auctions, which results in unfavourable conditions for Sri Lankan tea in the market.
