THE BIG PICTURE
DARING TO DREAM “You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith,” the former President of the United States Barak Obama once said. So while we dared to dream nearly three decades ago by launching LMD, we’re keeping the faith and doing it all over again!
So our pioneering streak has taken a new turn, a new direction so to say: LMD International was launched at the end of April and we have so far despatched 1,000 hard copies and some 30,000 digital editions to Sri Lankans in all corners of the world.
The strength of LMD’s Facebook page – with a following of nearly 29,000 – is also playing a part in spreading awareness about a magazine that we hope will catch the imagination of Sri Lankans both here at home and lands afar.
As for parallels, we launched LMD at a time when a civil war was raging in the island’s north – and today, LMD International is taking flight amid an unprecedented economic crisis and in the aftermath of a year of social turmoil when Sri Lankans took to the streets (and a promenade we call Galle Face) in a united call for ‘system change’ – which as we know, was hijacked by radical elements who infiltrated what was until then a uniquely peaceful movement led in the main by people from all walks of life.
So while that dream died a natural death following the violence that suddenly unfolded, we’re left to wonder whether the largely corrupt among the few politicians who are perceptibly clean will be back to rule the roost… and one dares to say, empty our coffers all over again!
At the end of the day or term however, it is the people in whose hands the next eventuality lies; and it is left to be seen whether we will see ‘more of the same’ with the misfits taking turns to rule the country in the name of ‘democracy.’
Enough said.
