CEA to monitor hazardous particulate matter below PM10

Sri Lanka’s Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has decided to monitor hazardous particulate matter below PM10 to coincide with World Environment Day on 5 June. President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to officially launch the programme.

PM10 refers to all particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometres or less, which can be easily inhaled. These microscopic components, in solid or liquid form, are injurious to health and pose a serious threat.

The CEA plans to use a colour code system to monitor dangerous particulate matter in Battaramulla.

According to the latest world air pollution report, Sri Lanka is ranked 18th among the worst countries for air pollution. With regards to this, efforts are being taken by the respective authorities to monitor air pollution levels and lower the concentration of hazardous pollutants in the air.

This would include strengthening existing environmental laws and effectively implementing the same. Routine checks are set to become part of the process to ensure adherence to these standards. Plans to set up mobile monitors across the country are underway with two such machines having already been installed in Battaramulla and Kandy, and expected to be operational from June onwards.
