Ninewells Hospital, a premier healthcare institution, is renowned for its commitment to comprehensive and compassionate care. Founded with a focus on women’s and children’s health, Ninewells expanded its services to a broader spectrum to meet the medical needs of the entire family. The hospital is distinguished by its pioneering advancements including the introduction of water birthing facilities and one of the most advanced neonatal care units in the private sector. With a dedication to integrating cutting-edge technology and maintaining high standards of patient care, Ninewells Hospital is a leader in medical innovation.

Q: To what do you attribute the significant improvement in Ninewells Hospital’s ranking?

A: The current ranking reflects several key factors. Our unwavering dedication to compassionate care has garnered heartfelt praise from patients, particularly for our staff’s kindness and support during childbirth and paediatric care.

We lead in innovation with pioneering facilities including the first water birthing facility, themed maternity suites and the largest cosmetic centre in a hospital. Our dedication to sustainability is underscored by our Green Building Council gold certification.

Our CSR efforts include pandemic support, free antenatal programmes at local Ministry of Health offices, backing the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians’ ‘Feed a Child’ initiative, and aiding women and children at Welikada Prison.

We also prioritise a positive work environment and women’s empowerment – as evidenced by our status as the first private sector hospital to join the United Nations Global Compact.

Q: How has the hospital’s commitment to patient care and innovation played a role in achieving this ranking?

A: Ninewells Hospital’s commitment to compassionate patient care and innovation has been pivotal in achieving our ranking as a leading hospital in Sri Lanka. Our dedication to providing exceptional care has built a strong reputation for excellence, particularly in childbirth and paediatric care.

Additionally, the continuous investment in state-of-the-art technology and training of staff ensures that we remain at the forefront of medical advancements.

Q: What message do you want to convey to stakeholders and the community?

A: Being recognised by our stakeholders is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our staff. This motivates us to uphold high standards, provide the best personalised patient care and strive to achieve more. It also helps us enhance our standards, attract skilled employees and explore new business opportunities.

Q: Can you provide insights into the role of the hospital’s staff and leadership in achieving this milestone?

A: With over 50 years of combined healthcare experience, our senior management team has proven its expertise. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ninewells remained operational without interruption, which is essential for expectant mothers.

The management was available 24/7, made prompt decisions and ensured ‘on the ground’ support. Effective risk mitigation including a six month stockpile of medication and surgical supplies allowed us to prioritise patient care. This period highlighted our strength, resilience and capability to expand during a crisis.

Q: What strategic plans and future initiatives are you considering?

A: We’re expanding our services at Ninewells Hospital, enhancing gynaecology and general surgery offerings alongside our strengths in obstetrics, paediatrics and fertility. This year, we’ve achieved over 500 successful plastic surgeries and numerous general surgeries including paediatric operations, hernia repairs and lump removals.

We’ve also acquired land for a new facility to improve parking and introduce additional specialities. We also took over Joseph Fraser Hospital, now Joseph Fraser Ninewells, a historic colonial hospital dedicated to women and children’s care, and aim to promote medical tourism with a unique local birthing experience.

Additionally, we’ve launched Yatra, Sri Lanka’s first ‘senior living’ resort managed by a hospital, offering high quality care for the elderly at a serene 20 acre property in Katana, Negombo. Looking forward, we hope to expand the Ninewells brand locally and internationally.
