CLAUDE ON HORIZON Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is set to hold talks with senior White House officials following growing national security concerns surrounding its latest AI models. Company executives including CEO Dario Amodei are expected to meet representatives from the US Department of Commerce (DOC) in Washington D.C.

The meeting follows Anthropic’s decision to block public access to Claude Fable 5, a newly released version of its advanced AI system. The move came after the government prohibited the American company from allowing foreign nationals to access the technology.

Anthropic described the model as its most capable publicly available system to date and acknowledged that its release carried certain risks.

Concerns emerged after reports of a possible ‘jailbreak’ vulnerability that could allow users to bypass the model’s intended safeguards. While the US government raised the issue, Anthropic stated that it had only received verbal evidence of the alleged flaw.

In an open letter, industry leaders urged the government to lift the controls and adopt a more transparent approach to assessing AI related risks in the future.

SECURE PRIVACY A recent proposal by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raised concerns among privacy campaigners and cybersecurity experts stateside. The agency is considering rules that would require customers to provide personal identification before purchasing or renewing prepaid mobile phone services, commonly known as ‘burner phones.’

According to the FCC, the proposal is intended to reduce illegal activities such as robocalls, scams and fraud.

Officials believe that verifying customer identities will make it easier to trace individuals who misuse anonymous phones for criminal purposes. Supporters argue that stricter registration requirements could improve public safety and strengthen telecom security.

However, critics warn that the measure could weaken privacy protections.

Burner phones are often used by journalists, activists, whistleblowers and survivors of domestic abuse, who need secure and anonymous communication tools. Privacy advocates argue that requiring identification for all prepaid phone services could expose vulnerable individuals to greater risks and increase surveillance.

The proposal highlights the challenge of balancing security and privacy in the digital age. While regulators seek effective ways to tackle fraud, opponents stress the importance of protecting anonymous communication.

As the debate continues, FCC’s plan is expected to spark further discussion about privacy rights, security and personal freedom.

HE-3 ON THE MOON Scientists and technology companies are increasingly looking to the moon as a potential source of helium-3 (He-3), which is one of the world’s rarest and most valuable materials.

The isotope is used in advanced physics research and quantum computing, and could play a future role in nuclear fusion – a technology that’s widely viewed as a promising source of clean energy.

Current supplies of He-3 mainly come from nuclear weapons programmes where it is produced through the decay of tritium. Experts warn that future demand could outstrip available supplies however, particularly as quantum computing continues to develop.

US based Interlune is among several enterprises planning to extract helium-3 from lunar soil, known as regolith. It aims to deploy autonomous mining equipment on the moon in the next decade. Supporters believe lunar mining could provide a long-term solution to the growing shortage of He-3.

Scientists are still uncertain about the concentration of helium-3 on the moon, and vast quantities of regolith may need to be processed to recover useful amounts. Some researchers also argue that extracting He-3 from deposits on Earth could prove more practical and cost-effective than mining the lunar surface.

ROBOT SOLDIERS Humanoid robots could one day become a feature of modern warfare with enterprises already developing machines designed for military use. US startup Foundation Robotics is building Phantom, which is a human shaped robot intended for tasks ranging from reconnaissance and supply transport to potential combat operations.

The company argues that robotic soldiers could reduce risks to human troops by carrying out dangerous missions such as entering buildings, inspecting hazardous areas and recovering casualties. It is currently testing its technology with the US and Ukrainian militaries, although weaponisation remains in the early stages.

Despite growing interest, experts say extensive challenges remain.

Modern humanoid robots still struggle with tasks that humans find simple including opening doors, navigating unpredictable terrain and handling objects with precision. Battery life, mobility and AI capabilities also need major improvements before these machines can operate effectively on a battlefield.

Critics warn that autonomous weapons could lower the threshold for conflict and create uncertainty over responsibility for lethal actions. As military interest in robotics grows, experts argue that international regulations may be needed to ensure the technology is developed and used responsibly.
