Wild and Wonderstruck In Yala

Yala is probably the first place that comes to mind when you hear the words ‘national park’ – and rightly so, since it is the island’s second largest and most popular national park. Yet, it’s so much more than simply a locale for leopard, bears, elephants and jungle... because Yala also has natural, historical and religious significance.

This national park has the highest population density of leopard on the planet and is said to have been the birthplace of the ancient ‘beast men’ known as ‘Nittaewo’ (similar to the Neanderthals).

It’s possibly the location from where the mythical King Ravana of the Kingdom of Lanka is said to have ruled ten provinces including this ancient island. Yala is also the bosom of one of the most sacred religious sites in this blessed isle.

It’s customary that a trip to this wildlife sanctuary includes one, two or more safari drives. Yala’s famous Block 1 is accessible from Palatupana and entails the obvious choice for many.

However, the Katagamuwa entrance near Kataragama, as well as the Galge access point for those who are en route from Ella, are also recommended if you consider yourself a nature lover.

Along with the safaris and nature photography, be sure to explore the panoply of adventures that Yala offers – from religious destinations and historic locations, to diving sites and more!
