MIND ADVENTURES PRESENTS DE PROFUNDIS 2.0: AN EVENING OF VOICE AND SOUND IN AID OF PALESTINIAN CHILDREN

Mind Adventures theatre company will stage De Profundis 2.0 (Out of the Depths) on 21st October, 7pm at the Namel and Malini Punchi Theatre, Borella.

Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s meditation on suffering and spirituality, the production draws on selected extracts from V.V. Ganeshananthan, Anne Ranasinghe, Ajith Herath, Parakrama Kodithuwakku, Mahmoud Darwish,Refaat Alareer, Leonard Woolf, and others. The evening blends voice and sound, with improvised compositions by musicians Simon Allen and Sarani Perera, and readings in English and Sinhala by Thusitha Jayasundera, Sean Amarasekera, Dhanushka Dias, Murthaaz Abdul Barry, and Hajarah Faleel.

All profits will be donated to United for Gaza and Hope Nest, two non-governmental organisations in Palestine working to improve children’s health and safety and to address severe malnutrition. Audience members will be informed of the final accounts and donation amounts.

“Palestine is the greatest tragedy of our time, our lives,” says Tracy Holsinger, founder of Mind Adventures. “Our collective empathy and compassion and hope for justice must persevere against such inhumanity. Colonialism and genocide cannot, in this age, be allowed to continue unchecked and unopposed. The writers we have chosen reflect not only the suffering of the people of Palestine, but also Sri Lanka’s own pain when it comes to issues of belonging, memory, war, and regeneration.”

De Profundis was first performed in November 2024 with different readers and featured writers, and launched the inaugural Kolamba Kamatha festival, founded by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, at the BMICH in 2025.This new production opens the Artistic Residency of Thusitha Jayasundera with Mind Adventures. Thusitha graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (UK) in 1993 and has had a distinguished career in theatre and on screen for more than 30 years. She is also the founder of Saara Nilla, a permaculture garden and community kitchen serving at-risk children in the Kirulapone area.
