An official from the Ministry of Ports and Aviation speaking on the condition of anonymity revealed that the Mattala and Ratmalana international airports are likely to close down operations owing to the airports making a loss.

Both these airports receive low number of flight landing and take offs which has contributed to the airports making a loss when compared to the airport operational costs.

He stated that the airport did not recieve enough revenue to cover monthly salaries of the staff working in both airports, transport costs for the staff, and maintenance costs at the airports.

In the meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority has asked its staff to come to office only thrice a week; Monday,s Wednesdays, and Fridays. International media reports also claim that inbound flights to Sri Lanka have to either refuel else where or fly full tank to Sri Lanka as the country does not have Jet fuel for refuelling purposes.
