Lion Brewery (Ceylon) is the home of Lion Beer and a benchmarked leader in the Sri Lankan market since 1881. The company prides itself on being a responsible industry leader, ensuring its products are designed, produced and marketed conscientiously, and with accountability. It is dedicated to creating value for stakeholders and incorporating visionary environmental standards into its processes. Upholding ethics, values and principles in all aspects of its business, the company recognises the responsibility that comes with being in the alcoholic beverage (alcobev) sector, and maintains its product portfolio with pride and responsibility.

Q: How does the company ensure that it enjoys its lion’s share, so to say, of ‘corporate respect’?

A: Lion Brewery (Ceylon) is dedicating itself to achieving sustainability initiatives, having established a multistage plan for the months and years ahead, which is adjusted for output targets and environmentally-friendly objectives.

Our goal is to establish a strong sustainability agenda for the business. Aluminium cans are a large part of the industry, and we are working closely with third party recyclers to ensure that the life cycle of our cans is a closed loop. This will play a pivotal role in the betterment of our planet for future generations.

As a company, Lion Brewery (Ceylon) has adopted a ‘brewnomic’ vision – first conceptualised by mechanical engineering company Steinecker – which is a supply concept for an energy self-sufficient, carbon neutral brewery.

This idea centres on breweries supplying their own energy by utilising residual materials accumulated during the brewing process, combining proven technology with a media supply that is gentle on resources.

And this ultimately allows for companies such as Lion Brewery (Ceylon) to optimise their energy usage, minimise peak loads and adopt a modular concept that can be independently implemented while benefitting the environment.

The company’s core values are a true reflection of Lion Brewery (Ceylon)’s commitment to being an industry leader that offers high-quality products.

Lion Beer is known for its traditional brewing recipes and state-of-the-art technology, as well as a commitment to world-class best practices and innovation.

Q: How does your company define the connection between ‘employee wellbeing’ and ‘business performance’?

A: In addition to introducing more eco-friendly goals for a better future, Lion Brewery (Ceylon) highlights the incredible work that our employees do on a daily basis, to help the company find and enjoy continuous success even after 140 years.

We empower our staff by living out our values, and work closely with them to invest in talent as this is the best way to shape the future of the business.

And we are committed to establish ‘best in class’ HR practices, creating and investing in our people in accordance with our long-term corporate direction.

Our ethos is to maintain best in class services and products, and encourage cohesiveness in every aspect of our operations.

While the numbers and targets may change annually, our key priority is to remain the market leader, provide consumers with best in class products and experiences, and sharpen the focus of our sustainability agenda.

Q: In your estimate, how is Lion Brewery (Ceylon) contributing to Sri Lanka’s present and future economic prosperity?

A: As the second largest taxpayer in the alcobev segment, contributing Sri Lankan Rupees 80.8 billion during 2023 to the local economy through the purchase of goods and services, the brewery is not only reaching these objectives but surpassing them. Our tax contribution for the past four years alone could finance the building of a second Victoria Dam!

Being a social lubricant, so to speak, our products have literally lifted the spirits of Sri Lankans for the past four decades or so – and are integral to the Sri Lankan tourism experience. And the continued growth of the tourism industry will provide a boost for the business.

And so we remain confident that through due process and focused commitment, we will meet our long-term sustainability goals.
