IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS STUDIES

LEADING THROUGH KNOWLEDGE

Vice Principal (Internationalisation) at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Stephanie Pitticas discusses the evolving role of executive education, global partnerships and transnational education.

She also reflects on the launch of Sri Lanka’s first British Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) qualification, offered through UWS’ longstanding partnership with the Imperial College of Business Studies (ICBS) and the university’s vision of making world-class education accessible beyond borders.

Q: As UWS strengthens its international presence, what key attributes does it prioritise when identifying and selecting partner institutions?

A: Our priority is always to partner with institutions that share our values, and align with our mission and vision.

If a partnership does not begin from a shared perspective, it is unlikely to be a lasting or successful one. We believe shared values provide the foundation for a trusting and purposeful partnership. This is the model that works for us and it is reflected in the long-term relationships we have built with our partners.

Q: ICBS has recently been validated to offer UWS’ DBA qualification. Why is this a major milestone for both institutions?

A: For our longstanding partnership, this marks a further strengthening of our relationship with Imperial College of Business Studies. As the first institution to offer a British Doctor of Business Administration in Sri Lanka, it demonstrates that both ICBS and UWS are at the forefront of responding to the needs of the local economy and regional demand.

Q: At a time when many professionals are assessing the value of further study, what distinguishes a DBA from a traditional PhD or MBA?

A: I believe the real appeal of the Doctor of Business Administration is that it can be completed alongside your career. While it requires commitment, the programme is designed for working professionals, enabling them to research and address real-world business challenges through applied learning.

I see a PhD as the route for those wishing to contribute to academic theory, whereas the DBA was created for professionals seeking to study and solve live business issues.

Q: How important is applied research in helping organisations address complex, real world business challenges?

A: It’s a necessity for both organisations and universities.

The University of the West of Scotland was founded in partnership with industry and has remained closely connected to the business community since 1897. We work with organisations every day to help solve real business challenges. Often, businesses approach us seeking a solution to one issue but leave with a range of solutions that benefit all areas of their organisation.

Q: UWS has established a strong international reputation. What guiding principles continue to shape the university’s global strategy?

A: Our guiding principle is that education should not be defined by borders. Talent and potential are universal, and it’s our job to ensure that anyone who can should fulfil their potential, regardless of background.

While that can be challenging, it remains our aspiration. Our role is to remove as many barriers to opportunity as possible – whether in Paisley, Scotland or Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Q: Looking ahead, what aspects of the partnership between the University of the West of Scotland and Imperial College of Business Studies are you most excited about?

A: How far we’ve travelled together and how many opportunities are still ahead for both institutions. This partnership has demonstrated and continues to demonstrate that education needs not be defined by borders, and this partnership embodies the aspiration originally set out.
