The Secret to Organisational Success

How to make work rewarding by sparking innovation and retaining talent
Dilrukshi Kurukulasuriya

Q: How do you foster innovation at DIMO and what role do people play in this process?

A: Innovation is a term that is often used loosely; to genuinely innovate, expertise is essential. It requires a culture that actively encourages innovation. At DIMO, we foster this culture by encouraging people to make mistakes.

Expertise is crucial for innovation; it doesn’t happen by accident. Therefore, we provide a great deal of guidance and training to support our people in their efforts to innovate. And the role of people in the process fundamentally comes down to the people themselves.

Culture is shaped by how people behave – and this includes an organisation’s leaders. Leaders play a significant role in this process; their behaviour, and what they encourage and appreciate, are reinforced in this culture.

Q: What values do you prioritise in your corporate culture?

A: Values can shift at times as they’re intangible. Our understanding of values is reflected in our people’s behaviour. When we prioritise values, they need to align with our goals. We prioritise five core values: integrity, people’s centrality, excellence, customer’s centrality and accountability.

However, it’s not merely about the values themselves. What truly matters is the behaviour that reflects these values. Integrity for instance, should be a given; it’s fundamental for any organisation and individual.

People’s centrality is another key value; it includes our staff, principals and customers. We aim to be a partner, aligning with our brand promise: ‘be the best partner.’ Excellence is a value we strive for in everything we do and accountability is also critical, encompassing environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects.

Q: How does DIMO attract and retain talent within the organisation?

A: We utilise both traditional and new channels to attract people. We engage with universities, conduct interviews and leverage social media among other methods. However, the core of how we attract people is through our employer brand and employer value proposition (EVP).

Our EVP centres on making work enjoyable and rewarding. This promise extends to both our current employees and potential candidates.

Q: And what tips can you offer in the context of maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

A: In simple terms, work while you work, play while you play – that’s the best approach. It’s important to remember that balance is subjective – so what works for me may not work for someone else.

We recognise that families and friends are important rather than only an employee’s work. So we ensure they have time for their loved ones, education and health. In addition to accommodating these needs, we host a variety of fun events.

DIMO strives to deliver on its brand promise and EVP, by making work enjoyable and rewarding. We also create opportunities for employees to pursue their interests and in addition, we prioritise employee health and wellness.
