Q: In the construction realm, what are the areas that DIMO represents?
A: DIMO has been instrumental in shaping the local construction industry landscape by equipping it with the latest cutting-edge construction machinery.

Since its inception, the Construction Machinery Equipment Division of DIMO began scaling by forging partnerships with world renowned construction machinery giants – Komatsu, BOMAG, Gehl, Carmix, Kaeser and Potain to name a few.

DIMO’s comprehensive portfolio comprises a diverse range of construction machinery including earth moving quarry and mining machinery, concrete equipment, air compressors, road building and compaction equipment, tower cranes and more.

In the earth moving quarry and mining machinery category, the company’s product offering consists of excavators, dozers, dump trucks, wheel loaders, motor graders, hydraulic breakers and skid steer loaders.

Its road building and compaction range includes light compaction equipment, pavers, feeders, compactors and rollers, making DIMO a one stop solution provider in the construction machinery sector.

As a wave maker in the industry, DIMO has introduced numerous latest technologies to the local construction machinery sphere. DIMO was the first to introduce Komatsu hybrid excavators, which are known for high fuel efficiency and low emissions, to the South Asian market.

Delivering the Komatsu D375, the largest bulldozer ever to be used in Sri Lanka, to INSEE was also another significant milestone in this journey.

Q: What are the major infrastructure development projects that DIMO has contributed to through its construction machinery arm?

A: DIMO’s journey began in 1969 with the supply of construction machinery for irrigation projects.

Over the years, the company has played a crucial role in the country’s postwar infrastructure development with its diverse range of machinery that caters to the spectrum of construction needs.

For instance, DIMO takes pride in its role as a construction machinery supplier in the Moragahakanda Development Project.

Additionally, we have made significant contributions to key road infrastructure development projects – namely, the Southern Expressway, Colombo Outer Circular Highway and Colombo-Katunayake Expressway in addition to the National Programme of Developing 100,000 Km of Roads Project.

Developing aviation infrastructure in the country, DIMO has played an important role in the construction of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and Bandaranaike International Airport extension projects.

Facilitating marine infrastructure, DIMO was involved in the Hambantota International Port and Port City Colombo development projects as a prominent construction equipment supplier.

The company’s contributions to these focal infrastructure development projects reflect DIMO’s commitment to accelerating the country’s growth to fuel the dreams and aspirations of the nation.

Q: DIMO recently expanded its construction arm beyond Sri Lanka’s borders. How has this initiative progressed?
A: DIMO’s strategic foray into international markets commenced with its successful entry into the Maldivian market.

Subsequently, demonstrating its resilience and dedication to growth amid economic challenges, DIMO strategically established a subsidiary in Bangladesh, and is now proudly serving as the esteemed distributor of Komatsu in Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bangladesh.
As we look ahead, we anticipate significant growth opportunities in Bangladesh and are committed to further strengthening our global presence by venturing into other regions with a keen focus on the Middle Eastern region.

Q: What is the state of Sri Lanka’s construction industry?

A: The construction industry in Sri Lanka stands as a cornerstone of socioeconomic development, particularly gaining significance in the postwar era.

While the industry demonstrated remarkable resilience amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2022 saw a profound economic crisis, precipitating an approximate 90 percent decline and consequential loss of employment opportunities.

Preceding the downturn, the industry witnessed notable advancements with ongoing projects spanning renewable energy, highway and airport expansion initiatives.

However, the recent setback has prompted a reevaluation of priorities. Encouragingly, there are positive indications of recovery including ongoing government deliberations to reignite stalled projects, potential financial support from donor agencies and a prevailing sense of optimism regarding the future trajectory of the construction industry in Sri Lanka.

DIMO is well-positioned to contribute significantly to the industry’s recovery as we remain optimistic about positive developments and growth in the local construction industry.
