ASTRON
Q: Given the country’s highs and lows since independence, what do you believe is the formula for Sri Lanka’s resilience? And how can it apply under prevailing circumstances?
A: Our culture and religious faith, support and encourage us through the lows we face from time to time.
We also have the experience of knowing that the lows don’t last and the situation will improve in the long term. Until such a time, we have the resilience to adapt to changing circumstances. Since Sri Lanka still has some semblance of democracy, we also hope for a change for the better.
Q: What is the role of corporates such as yours in reviving Sri Lanka’s economic and social landscape to reach its true potential?
A: Astron has contributed to the country’s pharmaceutical industry for 66 years. Despite all the issues we faced in 2022, our company is forging ahead with our vision of uplifting the wellbeing of Sri Lankans through the provision of high quality healthcare solutions, while adding value to our stakeholders. We are hopeful that Astron, together with other manufacturers, will be able to produce most commonly used pharmaceuticals locally.
Q: What are the significant milestones in your organisation’s journey?
A: Astron was incorporated in 1956 by Dumex – a Danish company, which set up the first pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the country. In 1958, the company’s shares were acquired by Pfizer, which managed and operated Astron for 35 years.
In 1993, Astron was acquired by our current shareholders under the first leveraged management buyout in Sri Lanka. Today, it is fully-owned and operated by Sri Lankans.
We research and develop, manufacture and market a wide range of pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, and herbal and animal healthcare products. With approximately 95 percent of our products being manufactured in the country, Astron is the largest Sri Lankan company selling locally produced pharmaceuticals in the open market.
Q: Has your organisation’s heritage evolved during this period?
A: Astron’s products are sold under brand names that are renowned for quality and efficacy. In a competitive industry, we take pride in our ethical standards. Our staff are qualified and trained, and expected to adhere to a defined code of conduct, policies and procedures. We also strive to ensure that our operations are carried out in an environmentally-friendly manner.
Q: How has Astron embraced change?
A: The healthcare industry is evolving fast in relation to good manufacturing practices, regulatory requirements and competition. We continuously upgrade our manufacturing facilities to keep up with new technology and regulations. In addition, we must adjust to changing social and economic requirements too.
