A THOUGHTFUL PUZZLE
Kodikara House was designed for a young couple who longed for a modern home in which they could unwind and enjoy tranquillity amid their busy lifestyles. Its realisation features a thoughtful puzzle of internal rooms and outdoor gardens that work together to produce the illusion of endless space on what’s actually a small 14 perch urban plot. This residence is located on Alakeshwara Road, which is a dense urban residential area in Ethul Kotte. The house comprises two storeys wherein the ground floor consists of space to park two vehicles, a living area, a visitor’s room, a dining room and pantry, and a service area. The first floor is home to a TV cum family lounge and the master bedroom with an attached bathroom. There’s also a private gym, as well as a library and study area. The courtyard that’s open to the sky is at the centre of the home where horizontal and vertical interaction between the spaces blossoms. And the wooden columns and floors make for a warm atmosphere in a modern setting while reminding one of native Sri Lankan courtyards. Straight and pure lines, simple forms, wide open views and large volumes of natural light minimise the distance between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
