Bank of Ceylon Celebrates 86th Anniversary with the Launch of Smart Remit Mobile App

Marking 86 years of pioneering service in Sri Lanka’s banking industry, the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) unveiled its latest digital innovation, the Smart Remit Mobile App, at a special anniversary celebration held at its Head Office. The new mobile application is yet another initiative that highlights the Bank’s long-standing legacy of innovation and its continued effort to meet evolving customer needs in a digitally driven world.
Specifically designed to enhance the experience of inward remittances, the app offers a smarter, faster, and more secure way for Sri Lankans and foreign nationals abroad, enabling money transfers to loved ones. With remittances forming a vital economic and emotional bridge between expatriates and their families in Sri Lanka, the app makes it easier than ever to stay connected.
According to Assistant General Manager-International of Bank of Ceylon Mr Upul Wijethunga, “Smart Remit Mobile App is designed with our customers’ needs at the heart of every feature. We understand that behind every remittance is a personal story, a family, a goal, a future. This app empowers users to stay connected to their loved ones and manage transfers effortlessly, securely, and conveniently.”
Echoing this sentiment, the Deputy General Manager-International, Treasury & Investment of Bank of Ceylon Mr. G.A. Jayashantha stated, “Being the No. 1 bank in Sri Lanka with a firm overseas presence, we understood this requirement more than anyone.” He added that the development of the Smart Remit Mobile App was a direct response to deep market research and the bank’s extensive understanding of the diaspora’s remittance needs.
“Many Sri Lankans settled outside the country have expressed a strong desire for a remittance platform they can rely on, one that is firmly established within Sri Lanka, to send money to their loved ones or as well wishes,” he noted. He further emphasized that “Smart Remit Mobile App will not only be an application that demonstrates the digital excellence of the Bank but, more importantly, a bridge that connects love between two countries.”
The app allows users to initiate real-time money transfers directly to BOC accounts or any other Sri Lankan bank account using Visa or Master debit or credit card issued outside Sri Lanka, through a few simple taps. It includes real-time tracking of transactions and offers a multilingual interface in Sinhala, Tamil, and English to ensure user accessibility. Enhanced security protocols safeguard user data, while push notifications keep users informed of transaction statuses and exclusive offers.
Smart Remit is available 24 hours a day, enabling users to send funds to Sri Lanka at their convenience from anywhere in the world. To celebrate the launch, Bank of Ceylon is offering a USD 1 onboarding fee waiver for the first 1,000 users, along with highly competitive exchange rates and exclusive in-app benefits. The app is tailored to the needs of Sri Lankan expatriates and foreign nationals who support their loved ones through remittances, helping simplify the process while promoting greater financial inclusion.
The official launch event was graced by members of the Bank’s Board, senior management, and distinguished guests.
