Q: How has 99x evolved over the years to become a global leader in creating innovative digital products?

A: At 99x, our journey to the top is rooted in a simple yet effective business strategy. We’ve formed client partnerships with the leading businesses in the digital product space. These organisations are always striving to outdo their competition, and innovation is a crucial part of that ambition.

In terms of our team, we place a strong emphasis on hiring and developing people who are not only highly skilled but also eager to challenge conventional norms and expand the boundaries of what is possible.

This mindset has been a key ingredient in our success over the past two decades. Working with leading businesses in the field has given us a lot of experience in terms of both the technical side of things and understanding what users want.

What’s most exciting is how this vast pool of experience is now creating a multiplying effect, enhancing significantly the value that we deliver to our clients. This has established us as the preferred partner for digital product vendors who are aiming to develop revolutionary digital products.

Q: What value if any do awards add to the organisations that are operating in today’s business landscape?

A: In these times where uncertainty is constant, awards really and truly help us to stand out. They show we’re doing things right and that we’re dedicated to offering our clients the best.

This recognition is important as it sets us apart, giving us an edge over the competition. And this isn’t only about looking good – it’s about communicating our value proposition to build trust with our clients, investors and partners.

But there’s more to it. Winning awards means a lot to our team… or ‘Xians’ as we fondly call ourselves. They’ve earned a pat on the back for their creativity, hard work and dedication. This type of recognition really lifts spirits and keeps everyone motivated, creating a workplace where people are excited to push the limits and do their best.

So awards aren’t only about trophies at 99x. They’re an integral part of our business model – to show the world what we’re about and keep our team motivated, both of which are crucial in navigating today’s prevailing economic environment.

Q: In your opinion, how do award schemes help to shape the diverse industries and sectors in Sri Lanka?

A: Award schemes play an important role in shaping the trajectory of industries and sectors in any country. In a competitive landscape, entities strive to become industrial and sectoral leaders, and awards are the benchmark for such leadership. This offers an effective way for policy makers to steer industries to national goals.

Take the IT industry, for instance. If Sri Lanka aims to be recognised for innovation, then awards highlighting innovative achievements must be promoted to be prominent. They motivate businesses to push the boundaries to become innovative and creative. Similarly, if the country’s unique value proposition lies in ethical people management practices, awards focussing on this aspect can drive the industry or sector in that direction. The same goes for sustainability: awards centred on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria can foster a culture of sustainability.

Therefore, award schemes should be a key part of discussions among policy makers and industry associations. They’re not merely accolades; used effectively, they’re tools for guiding industries and sectors to outcomes that are most beneficial for our country.

Q: What new criteria would you recommend be introduced to Sri Lanka’s awards and recognition schemes for businesses in the country – and why?

A: Considering Sri Lanka’s economic challenges, it’s crucial that our award schemes evolve to support and stimulate recovery. The key area to focus on is the country’s exports – especially in sectors such as IT – which contribute significantly to our foreign exchange inflows. Recognising businesses that excel in exports can be a game changer.

Therefore, I recommend introducing criteria that emphasise export-oriented achievements. This would mean awarding enterprises that not only innovate but also successfully penetrate international markets, thereby bringing in valuable foreign exchange.

By spotlighting and rewarding export excellence, we can foster a more outward looking business mindset. Adopting such an approach will not only help individual entities thrive but also contribute to the broader economic resurgence of Sri Lanka as a result.
