UNITED VENTURES
Q: Reaching a 30 year milestone is a significant achievement… what have been the key factors behind United Ventures’ sustained success in the Sri Lankan travel sector and tourism industry?
A: United Ventures’ sustained success stems from the enduring vision of its founder Afghar Mohideen, who championed organic growth driven by evolving industry needs. Our journey has been defined by passion, commitment and hard work, ensuring we adapt to challenges while staying true to our core values.
Q: As a woman led company, how does United Ventures champion gender diversity and empower women in travel and tourism – especially as we celebrate International Women’s Day?
A: We foster an inclusive work culture and actively support and empower women in the industry by providing opportunities for leadership, professional development and mentorship. Our commitment to gender diversity goes beyond our workforce – it is embedded in our business ethos, encouraging more women to take on leadership roles in travel and tourism.
Q: The travel sector and tourism industry were among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic… how did United Ventures navigate the crisis, and what lessons did you learn about resilience and adaptability?
A: We approached the crisis with an innovative mindset, drawing strategies from outside the industry to navigate the unprecedented challenges. This approach was carefully discussed and aligned with our team and principals, enabling us to stay afloat and emerge stronger.
The key lessons we learned were that resilience comes from adaptability – being open to unconventional solutions and fostering a team driven approach to overcoming obstacles.
Q: With travel and tourism rebounding, how has United Ventures positioned itself for growth – and what new opportunities do you see shaping the industry in the coming years?
A: As the industry experiences rapid transformation, particularly with advancements in technology, United Ventures remains committed to staying ahead of the curve. We continuously innovate and adapt to emerging trends, ensuring we provide seamless, tech driven travel solutions.
Looking ahead, we see immense opportunities in sustainable tourism, digital integration and experiential travel – areas that will redefine the future of the industry.
Q: As a leader, what message would you like to share with aspiring women entrepreneurs looking to build successful and resilient businesses in Sri Lanka?
A: Trust in your natural strengths. Women possess incredible intuition, resilience and leadership potential. Be fair, patient and lead with integrity. Success isn’t only about personal gain – it’s about uplifting those around you.
Encourage your team to challenge themselves and reach for greater heights; and together, you’ll build something truly remarkable.
Q: How have your life experiences influenced your career choices and leadership philosophy?
A: As the eldest daughter of a tea planter, I took on responsibilities early as my mother was an asthmatic, and I supported my father with managing our home and caring for my siblings. Though I began studying law, unforeseen circumstances led me to a career in hospitality, which I loved but had to leave for a better work life balance.
Transitioning into the airline sector with United Airlines 30 years ago, I was mentored by a remarkable female leader who shaped my professional approach. My faith has been my guiding strength through life’s challenges, helping me navigate both personal and professional hurdles with resilience.
My career has been a journey of growth, learning and meaningful connections, shaping both my values and leadership style.
