Q: How did The Kingsbury handle the situation in the immediate aftermath of the recent attacks?

A: We’ve been terribly shaken by the recent terror attacks and it’s been a very challenging period for us. However, it’s been the view of the management and the entire team that it is our responsibility – not only towards our clientele but also staff, suppliers, third party partners and the industry as a whole – to get back on our feet and restore normalcy.

The hotel is slowly picking up with many guests patronising the hotel in a show of support and solidarity. We’ve had loyal guests from overseas return to stay with us only weeks after the incident. Many guests have expressed their wish to visit soon.

We’re developing promotions and interesting offers to suit the current environment. Moreover, we’ve had many weddings taking place, one of which was two days after the incident as the bridal couple insisted that it be held as scheduled. We put our best foot forward to provide the couple and their guests a memorable day despite the challenging situation.

Q: What security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of guests?

A: To reassure our clientele and improve safety, we have put in place very detailed security procedures – from the entrance to the hotel and covering the periphery as well – with the support of state security. This has evoked numerous positive responses from guests as well as employees.

Our focus is on ensuring that security checks are carried out in a hospitable manner and don’t make guests feel uncomfortable. We strongly believe that the more extensive and thorough our security measures are, the safer and more secure our guests and employees will feel.

Seeing the armed forces around gives us a sense of security; we don’t feel threatened in any way. We’re deeply appreciative of the security and support provided.

Q: How long will it take for Sri Lankaís tourism industry to recover, in your view?

A: Terrorism has reared its head in many countries across the world and most destinations have their own instabilities. There’s hardly any location that can be completely cleared of any threats. We believe that the country’s intelligence authorities are doing their very best.

Sri Lanka will bounce back. We’re already seeing tourists returning only weeks after the incident to explore and experience the magic that this island has to offer. In fact, we had a group of 10 very enthusiastic and exuberant travel bloggers who recently visited the hotel to tour the island.

We are positive that the government, the tourism ministry and related partners will work together to rebuild trust among travellers so that they visit this wonderful country once again.

Q: And what would you say to travellers who are sceptical about visiting Sri Lanka?

A: As mentioned previously, this island will bounce back. Its resplendence, beauty and richness can’t be taken away. Measures are being taken to ensure that safety across the island is improved and restored.

Sri Lanka was voted the number one destination to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet – all the elements that gave it this title are very much in existence and waiting to be discovered by travellers searching for authentic experiences.

We’re confident that tourism will be revived and we will enjoy the wealth of visitors from across the globe once again.
