Sri Lanka and Australia unite to counter people smuggling

Sri Lanka has reiterated joint efforts to counter human smuggling operations from the island to Australia in the light of a recent escalation of the issue.

The need to jointly develop sustainable and long-term strategies – including campaigns to educate Sri Lankans on the risks involved in irregular migration – was discussed at a meeting with the Australian delegation led by Major General Craig Furini, Commander of Australia’s Joint Task Force – Operation Sovereign Borders (OSB).

Ever since its inception in 2013, OSB has looked to prevent Sri Lankan illegal migrants from reaching Australia by boat.

The partnership between the two countries is said to be instrumental in keeping the problem at bay with Sri Lanka continuing to assist Australia in this mission.
