SPRING & SUMMER
Q: Twenty-five years is a long journey. What kept you going as an entrepreneur?
A: The greatest joy I derive from my work is seeing other people appreciate our creations. As a leading brand in Sri Lanka catering to a mass audience, we are proud that 85 percent of our clothing is designed and manufactured locally.
I launched Spring & Summer in 1995 with my husband with the modest aim of providing for my family. As the company grew, we realised we had a winning formula, and began expanding our outlets and clothing portfolio.
Over time, the number of employees grew, and with our workplace’s warm and friendly atmosphere, we became like one big family. I felt a responsibility to grow the business so that they too could prosper. The dedication and support of my staff and family motivated me to become more ambitious, and open new outlets.
Presently, Spring & Summer has six major outlets in Wattala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Panadura, Colpetty and Bambalapitiya. The clothing brand is also available through an online store with islandwide delivery to cater to the new trend of people shopping from the comfort of their homes.
Q: How do you practise diversity at work?
A: We consider employees to be family; and because of this approach, we employ people from all walks of life, and across all races and religions. More importantly, I’m proud to contribute to women empowerment as 75 percent of my staff is female.
As a woman, I understand the hardships women face in their daily lives and providing for their families, so we provide equal pay for equal work, and equal opportunities to both men and women. There are no divides of any kind at Spring & Summer, least of all gender.
Q: So how has the company benefitted from being diverse?
A: A workplace that does not discriminate on any grounds, and is inclusive and diverse, automatically creates an environment of collaboration, learning and innovation. I believe the fact that we embrace employees across every consideration has driven greater loyalty and higher productivity.
Staff that feels valued ensures customers leave the store happy, which is our goal. The personalised service at Spring & Summer outlets is unparalleled and has built a growing base of loyal repeat customers.
Q: What are the main challenges you face as a businesswoman?
A: My main challenge is what all women face in Sri Lanka, be they at the grassroots or top echelons – i.e. balancing family and work.
In my case, the supportive network built with our employees enabled me to fulfil both responsibilities, which is also how we empower our female staff to enjoy a stable work-life balance.
Q: And what is your advice for young female entrepreneurs?
A: If you want success, don’t seek instant gratification but be ready to go the distance. To be successful, you need to have a clear goal and then dedicate all your resources to making it a reality.
Life throws many challenges at us in our journey but if we keep fighting and never give up on our dreams, success will be ours.
