1995
AGAINST ALL ODDS
LMD’s inaugural anniversary issue in August 1995 delved into Sri Lanka’s business landscape, highlighting the hurdles faced against a backdrop of sluggishness and inconsistency. The necessity for a forward-thinking mindset amid infrastructure shortcomings and a raging civil conflict at the time was emphasised to achieve success. LMD’s goals centred on cultivating management excellence, adapting to global shifts, and fostering harmony and national wellbeing.
1996
WAR OR PEACE
The second anniversary edition explored the privatisation of conflict resolution as the armed conflict was at its height and peace negotiations were underway. LMD mooted that conflicts of this nature demand new approaches with middle range leaders playing pivotal roles. While the business community lamented the economic toll of war, greater involvement in peace efforts was urged – especially in contexts like Sri Lanka’s conflict.
1998
THE LMD-SMART BCI
The 1998 anniversary issue introduced the LMD-Smart Business Confidence Index (BCI), marking the launch of a pioneering tool to analyse and measure business sentiment. Through the introduction of a qualitative survey, the BCI aimed to provide valuable insights for investors, CEOs, economists, marketers and even governments, addressing the elusive nature of confidence in investment decisions. The index continues to be the only one of its kind 26 years later.
2012
REFORM AGENDA FOR EDUCATION
This anniversary edition focussed on education reforms – it deliberated on Sri Lanka’s emphasis on education for development. While achievements like our high literacy rate were celebrated, flaws in the system – particularly in higher education – were highlighted in the magazine. The issues highlighted in LMD included quality assurance, funding, outdated curricula and the advent of private education with inadequate regulation.
2013
NEXT GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS
This special edition showcased 11 individuals under 50 as being among the next generation of Sri Lanka’s business leaders – a diverse and dynamic group poised to shape the nation’s economic landscape. Emphasising qualities such as vision, persistence and entrepreneurship, these next gen leaders represented various sectors and exemplified the evolving criteria for success, signalling a promising future for Sri Lanka’s business ecosystem.
2014
DEMOCRACY SANS EQUITY
The 2014 anniversary edition of LMD examined the disparities between South Asian and Southeast Asian democracies, particularly in the context of equity. While South Asia struggled with democratic processes hampered by social divisions, Southeast Asia emphasised social equity alongside marketisation. However, LMD noted that both regions faced challenges of impunity and communal mindsets, highlighting the complexity of achieving true equity in governance.
2015
SRI LANKA’S A-LIST
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) flagged Sri Lanka’s public sector as largely corrupt, setting the stage for a national anti-corruption drive. Amid promi-ses of good governance, the government’s ‘100 day programme’ targeted corruption by summoning high profile figures. In this special issue, LMD published an A-List for integrity, compiled from public perceptions and an online survey, honouring 21 individuals from diverse backgrounds (including politicians, cricketers and professionals) who are recognised for their integrity.
2016
CHARISMATIC BUSINESSPEOPLE
LMD’s 2016 anniversary special edition celebrated 22 charismatic business leaders who had left an indelible mark on Sri Lanka’s corporate landscape since 1994. These leaders blended their business acumen with magnetic charm, inspiring devotion and driving their visions to fruition. LMD noted that while charisma can be a powerful asset, it must be complemented by a robust understanding of business fundamentals to avoid potential pitfalls and ensure long-term success.

PASSING THE BATON
This anniversary edition delved into the evolving role of Generation Z amid a rapidly changing global landscape. With nearly a fifth of Sri Lanka’s population represented by this growing demographic, their impact is undeniable. From prioritising job security to advocating for social integration and climate action, the voice of Gen Z demands attention and action, LMD concluded.

GLOBAL ICONS
In its 26th anniversary edition, LMD honoured 26 global icons, recognising their outstanding achievements across diverse fields. Amid global upheavals, from tackling raging bushfires to pandemics at the time, these exemplary individuals inspired hope and resilience; their stories transcended barriers of race, gender and age, offering valuable lessons for a world grappling with unprecedented challenges.
2021
PAST BUSINESS LEADERS
LMD celebrated the achievements of 27 Sri Lankan business icons who contributed to the nation’s growth amid challenges including the effects of conflict, natural disasters and the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the adversities, the 27 icons propelled their organisations to success, enhancing Sri Lanka’s standing in the eyes of the world of business. Their achievements served as inspiration for future leaders amid the onset of new and unprecedented challenges.
2022
AGENTS OF CHANGE
In the midst of Sri Lanka’s unprecedented economic crisis and the social unrest that unfolded in April 2022, the youth were confronted with an uncertain future. In the wake of mounting debt and soaring inflation, they took to the streets and raised their voices, demanding ‘system change’ to salvage hope for a better tomorrow. This special standalone edition was dedicated to the country’s youth, for rallying an entire nation to rise and demand change.

GREEN COVER
Shaping a sustainable future for Sri Lanka is an imperative amid global challenges on multiple fronts. The concept of a green-blue economy integrates the sustainable use of marine resources with conservation efforts. This anniversary issue focussed on renewable energy, responsible waste management and green financing initiatives – and Sri Lanka’s efforts to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, paving the way for a prosperous and eco-friendly future.
