HILL COUNTRY RETREAT

So Sri Lanka

Breathtaking vistas of Nuwara Eliya

Ruwandi Perera is longing for the cool climes of the hill country

You’ve probably been there many times before but there’s something magical about Nuwara Eliya that makes it one of those destinations to which you want to return.

Perhaps it’s the cool climate that refreshes your body and mind, lush green hills that are carpeted by endless tea plantations, the bustling township that still holds onto its colonial splendour or a general feeling of leisure in the air.

Whatever the magic is, May is a great month for heading to the hills – because you’ve managed to avoid the April rush when almost all of Colombo society visits Nuwara Eliya, and the quaint little town is free and open for adventure.

Nuwara Eliya – or ‘Little England’ as it is fondly known – is where time stands still. That’s probably why it makes you feel like you’ve travelled back over the decades to the island’s colonial period.

So breathe in the clean, fresh air, and take in the sights of the historic architectural marvels such as the Nuwara Eliya Post Office, The Grand Hotel, The Hill Club Hotel and the Queenswood Cottage to name a few.

Yet, this little town that lies in a cosy valley surrounded by lush green hills also has a modern side to it – there are restaurants, pubs, bars and leisure activities galore. You can enjoy the best of both worlds, colonial serenity and contemporary life… but don’t try to cover everything in one hustle and bustle visit!
