Although the history of the temple dates back to the 10th century, the current structure with its stunning architecture and intricate carvings was built only in the 18th century. The annual festival held from July to August is one of the largest Hindu celebrations in Sri Lanka, during which a statue of the deity is carried in procession on a beautifully decorated chariot around the temple. The kovil is a ‘must-visit’ for anyone interested in Hinduism, as well as Sri Lankan history and culture.

JAFFNA FORT This 17th century historic fortress was built by the Portuguese; later occupied by the Dutch; and finally, the British. Today, the fort is a popular tourist attraction and an important historical landmark in Jaffna. Visitors can explore various structures in the fort including the Queen’s House – once the residence of former Dutch governors – and the Garrison Cemetery, which contains the graves of British soldiers who died during the colonial period.

The soft and fluffy steamed cake known as idli is also made from a batter of fermented rice and lentils. Idli too is served with sambar and coconut chutney. And Jaffna crab curry is a spicy and flavoursome dish, which is made with fresh crab and a blend of spices. It is generally served with rice or roti.
