SLT-MOBITEL Partners with Forest Department for Mangrove Restoration Project
SLT-MOBITEL, has joined forces with the Forest Department to undertake a significant mangrove restoration project in Pubudugama. The partnership aims to restore 4.2 hectares of mangrove ecosystems and ensure their long-term sustainability.
The agreement signing took place recently at the Forest Department, Sri Lanka. Nishantha Edirisinghe, the Conservator General of the Forest Department, Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody – Chairperson to National Mangrove Experts Committee of Sri Lanka, Prabhath Dahanayake, Chief Marketing Officer of SLT-MOBITEL, Anuruddha Suriarachchi – General Manager Marketing services of SLT and Several other officials from SLT-MOBITEL and Forest Department participated in this remarkable occasion.
This initiative aligns with SLT-MOBITEL’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) theme of ‘Co-Connection,’ emphasizing the company’s commitment to fostering harmony between its operations, the environment, and society. The mangrove restoration project directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land. Additionally, it contributes to the objectives outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Prabhath Dahanayake, Chief Marketing Officer of SLT-MOBITEL, shared his thoughts: “As a service-oriented organization, SLT-MOBITEL may not have much direct carbon emissions. However, we recognize our responsibility in energy consumption and are committed to supporting carbon reduction initiatives for the betterment of our country. SLT-MOBITEL is pleased to embark on this project with a scientific approach to sustain our mangrove restoration program.”
Nishantha Edirisinghe, the Director General of the Forest Department of Sri Lanka, commended, “SLT-MOBITEL’s commitment to restoring mangroves is commendable and sets a positive example for other organizations. This initiative will not only enhance biodiversity but also strengthen community resilience against climate change.”
