Celebrates World Ocean Day with innovative marine conservation initiatives

Kosgoda, Sri Lanka – June 18, 2024 – In honour of World Ocean Day, Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort is proud to unveil a series of impactful initiatives aimed at preserving our marine environment. These projects reflect the resort’s deep commitment to sustainability, conservation and community engagement, aligning with Marriott International’s Serve360 and Nurturing Our World platforms.

Turtle-shaped waste collection unit

In a groundbreaking effort to promote responsible waste disposal, the resort has constructed a unique turtle-shaped waste collection unit using repurposed materials from the property. This innovative unit, positioned on Kosgoda beach, serves as the sole waste collection point along the coastline. It is designed to ensure the responsible disposal of all forms of waste, benefiting both tourists and locals while creating a safer environment for the five endangered sea turtle species that frequent Kosgoda throughout the year.

Mano Gunasekera, General Manager of Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort, emphasised the significance of this initiative: “Our goal was to create a functional and symbolic structure that highlights the importance of protecting marine life. The turtle-shaped unit is not just a waste collection point; it’s a reminder of our responsibility to safeguard the environment.”

Innovative canal filtration system

The resort has also implemented a filtration system using existing materials that have been repurposed from the property. This system, installed in local canals adjoining the property, prevents waste from flowing into the ocean while maintaining the natural migration paths of aquatic species. This project demonstrates the resort’s proactive approach to reducing ocean pollution and preserving local biodiversity.

Gunasekera explained the process behind this initiative: “We repurposed materials available at the resort to create an effective and sustainable filtration system. This project not only protects the marine ecosystem but also supports the local community by ensuring cleaner waterways.”

Educational workshop: “Waves of Change: Honouring the Ocean & Safeguarding Sea Turtles”

In addition to these physical initiatives, Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort conducted an educational workshop themed “Waves of Change: Honouring the Ocean & Safeguarding Sea Turtles.” This workshop aimed to educate local school children about ocean conservation and the importance of protecting sea turtles. The event saw active participation from students, teachers, and principals from the Kosgoda area, along with local community members, village officers, and turtle conservation project members.

The workshop featured expert insights from educators at the University of Colombo’s zoology department and specialists from local turtle conservation projects. Hotel associates and guests also joined the event, fostering a strong sense of community and commitment to marine conservation.

Reflecting on the workshop’s success, Gunasekera noted, “Education and awareness is a crucial part of our sustainability efforts. By engaging local children and the community in conservation activities, we hope to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards.”

Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort is dedicated to the long-term success of these projects through regular clean-ups and continuous monitoring. The resort’s initiatives underscore its commitment to the resilience and sustainable growth of the communities it serves.

Gunasekera highlighted the resort’s alignment with Marriott’s Serve360 and Nurturing Our World platforms: “Our efforts in Kosgoda are a testament to Marriott International’s commitment to sustainability. We believe that by nurturing our environment and engaging with the community, we can create a positive impact that extends far beyond our property.”

These collective efforts by Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort not only celebrate World Ocean Day but also set a benchmark for sustainable practices in the hospitality industry. By integrating innovative waste management solutions, community education, and ongoing environmental stewardship, the resort demonstrates a comprehensive approach to marine conservation.
