DAVID BOWIE RETURNS WITH THE NEWLY RESTORED “ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS: THE MOTION PICTURE”

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Scope Cinemas is excited to announce the screening of the newly restored “Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture” at Colombo City Centre for the month of July starting July 7th. This iconic film, which originally premiered in 1979, captures the moment when David Bowie retired from his Ziggy Stardust alter ego. It was a decision that secured his future as a shape-shifting artist and unleashed a wave of ideological freedoms that continue to influence the creative community today. The British Council is delighted to support the newly restored and extended cut of director DA Pennebaker’s concert film, Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders From Mars, in partnership with Scope Cinemas, as part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations of UK-Sri Lanka diplomatic ties. We hope this will allow a wider audience to enjoy and experience world-class UK Arts.

Chassy Cortes, Head of Marketing and Public Relations at Scope Cinemas, spoke about the significance of the film. “David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust is more than a character; it’s a symbol of freedom that has influenced artists’ careers across generations, reminding them that transformation is more than possible in the creative world. This film captures a pivotal moment in music history, and we’re thrilled to bring this experience to our audience. It’s not just about watching a movie; it’s about reliving a moment that changed the course of pop culture.”

The restored version of the film features the full uncut performance from 50 years ago, including final scenes with the legendary guitar player Jeff Beck. It also includes a fully restored 4K visual mix overseen by Director DA Pennebaker’s son, Frazer, and a 5.1 mix undertaken by producer Tony Visconti. With an extended running time of 1 hour and 42 mins, the film offers a comprehensive look at the adoration of Bowie fans and captures David onstage and in his dressing room prior to the show.

Scope Cinemas invites all movie enthusiasts and Bowie fans to join this screening and experience the magic of cinema and music like never before.
